Dont bother buying insulated waders. Buy breathables and wear a good baselayer, fleece, and wool socks.

For brands, look at simms, Dan Bailey, and Patagonia.

I too had a pair of Cabelas waders but they only lasted for two years when they developed a leak around the top of the neoprene boots. They just did not last for me. Before that I had a pair of Orvis lightweights that I only got about three years out of. Sooo last year I made an investment in a pair of Simms G3 guides. Kind of pricey at around $350.00 but I liked the fact that they are made here in the USA when most of the others are made overseas. A friend of my son who guides in Alaska has a pair of these and he lives in them. Never had a problem and he is on his fourth year. I agree with the drake when he says to buy breathables and wear a good layering system underneath. Good Luck!

Also with breathable they are easily repaired. There is a great video on flyandfloatfishing.com, dont think just because your waders are leaking that you have to buy new ones. When you see what the guy on that video did to his you'll understand. I agree with the above can't go wrong with breathables thats what I wear all year.

I went to that web site and couldn't find the video.  Can you guide me there?

Cabelas bootfoot is the warmest neoprenes I've worn.  Saying a wader only lasts 1 or 2 years isn't telling.  You local steelhead guys are hitting those tribs very frequently so two years might be a realistic expectation.

Simms has the best warranty, but you'll pay much more upfront.

I've tried breathables with extra layers.  That works on Erie tribs were you can avoid wading in far.  But on my regular tailwater, i've got to wade to mid thigh to cast to the other side....  Cabelas bootfoot are the ticket for extended deep wading.

I've used a pair of cabelas waist highs for over 6 years now (at least once a week thru the winter) and they're still going strong. went to waist highs (easier on my back and to take a wizz). used cabelas chest neos for years before. Going to get a new pair soon (before felts are outlawed) stud them and they work fine in winter (just gotta pay attention to the snow/mud pack before wading). seal skin or polartec socks and fleece liners are all I wear under and never have a problem even in the coldest times. Of course in milder times, out come the Simms breathables. It's all in what one is comfortable in.  Dave

I've tried lug sole waders.  I think those would work well in Erie.  Felt just seems to attract snow like a magnet.  But I nearly killed myself walking over slime covered rocks in my home water and had to go back to felt.

So there's more $$$ needed.  Bootfoot with lug soles for Erie tribs.  Bootfoot waders with felt for other streams.

After exstensive research, I finally pulled the plug and ordered a pair of Simms Extreme Waders! these are the bootfoot model with the boots being made by the Muck Boot Co. their rated for -40 below, and breathable uppers with a special insulating material. The price was steep 429.00 but the warranty and the idea of warm feet was worth it.

$429 for waders is big bucks but that Simms warranty makes it worthwhile.

I had the Cabellas Spring Run Waders, The neoprene waders were heavy, and after some time you began to sweat. The bigest problem for me was the warm feet part..electric socks just don't cut it. I ordered mine from a guy on e-bay he's based in Michigan where the weather is real nasty, told me he loves em, and wished rthey had come out sooner. No Tax and Free Shipping sealed the deal. The lug sole model is only 399.95 I opted for the felt which will also accomodate studs, just have to seal them in with Aqua-Seal, they'll last longer

I own these waders and they are the best.  ( G 3 )The boot is only rated for minus 20 but that is more than enough. I own a quality pair of neo bootfoots but I get tired beating brush on the rivers. The extream bootfoots by Simms are now being made in China. Last year they all failed. I think they got it right this year. My fishing partner got them and loves them. I also own an original Simms stockingfoot from about 10 years ago and they have not leaked yet, believe it or not. Yeah these are kind of pricey at $499.00 but I am sure they are going to last for years. But you can have them put the muck boots on most waders that Simms makes so you dont have to spend $499.00 to be comfortable and stay warm.

For cold winter weather, neoprene is hard to beat.  I have a pair of Mad Dogs with 600 gram boots and they've been going strong for 3 years now.  Keep in mind, you have to take care of whatever you get into....hang them upside down in a dry place after each use.  If you need to make repairs, use aquaseal...the stuff is great.

Look around there should be some deals coming out. With the economy in a down turn prices will fall. They may not go down till after the trout opener but if the economy does not turn around there will be some fire sales. Especially if the shops want to stay in business.
Looks as if most of the rod manufactures have been laying off employees.

Simms are made in the USA but do not have the neoprene waders as the breathable's will do great with layers on underneath. I wear mine with no problems fishing in temps down to the single digits @ +9*F, by that time the fun of fishing does not compare with the problems of ICE.

    BTW:
The private fishing clubs are having a hard time gaining new members. Do a google search and you will find some deals there too. Word on the street, Spring Ridge Club are having some problems with the PAF&BC  cutting into their private waters. Word is they are looking for other areas to lease on Elk, Walnut and the East side streams.

I wanted to second the patching flexibility with breathables.  I have a pair I bought at an outdoor retail store.  My one fishing buddy is insistant on us collecting our own bait.  Well in the summer and early fall, that involves briars etc.  I found that a product call "stitchwitch" AKA iron in facing and a bit of material similar to what the waders are made from, nylon specifically.  I have made patches on gashes in the waders that have sealed and not leaked again.
We fished last week when it was 8degrees.  I was wearing breathables with base layered clothes and sox with toe warmers.  Plenty warm except for the toes, even with the warmer.  Buddy in neoprene boot felt bottom same difference.  Matter of personal choice.

i had cabelas 5mm neoprene bootfoot waders and beat them pretty well on the tribs and trout streams for a little over 5 years before i got leaks.  Now i have the spring run 5mm and they are the cats pijamas for cold weather fishing.  They are heavy and can be a pain for walking but you will stay warm and dry and i've stood in the same generally area in 34 to 35 deg water for 5 hours and never had cold feet....my 2 cents... and they are alot cheaper then breathable waders.....

Thanks guys for all of the great advice. I think I will go with the cabelas bigfoot I have heard good things. I am also considering breathables for spring fishing.

I have a set of the Wright McGill breathables.  They have lasted very well.  First set formed a leak after warranty was over and I sent an email to the manufacturer.  They still replaced them for free.  Good prices and great service.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
