I know 1 day between Conneaut and 'Bula we ran into an enormous school of 'eyes, steelies, and S*&theads all together and must have caught 20 or 30 that size and bigger along with 3 limits of eyes and 4 steelies.

MAN I wish I had a camara on me last Sunday. Was up on Erie, out of Ashtabula, and landed the biggest I ever caught. I would have to say it went over 20 lbs guys! It was freakin huge! I'd guess it was around 30" long.

Same here. Man I hate those things.

And have you ever noticed how they always manage to get hooked by all three hooks of a treble hook?   Why can't game fish get hooked like that?

Reminds me of the time about 11 years ago I stopped in Lock #3 Tackle in Harmerville. While I was in there, a young boy comes in with a Sheephead he just caught out of the Allegheny. He brought it in to be weighed. It was a huge Sheephead and it went 11+ lbs. He mentioned to the guy working at the tackle shop that he was going to get it mounted. Me, being the idiot that I am and not knowing how to keep my big mouth shut, I said to the boy, "Son, that's a Sheephead. People ussually don't get those mounted". To which he replied, "What do you mean, I'm going to get it mounted and hang in on the wall right next to my Sucker".

State record is 19lbs 4 oz.....I think that fish was caught in the Monongahela River at Monongahela. I've caught a lot in the Yough River near Connellsville. They love crayfish and one day I caught so many of them I had to quite fishing because my arm hurt so bad from fighting them in that river current. Some were in the 10 pound class.

Monongahela River is right, 1994, not that long ago. I think if the folks here pool their talents we can bring this important record right home to Erie.

I got this one  drift fishin out of vermillion, first it almost snatched my rod out of the boat as I was draining the main vien, then it proceeded to strip the bearings out on my shimano bantum baitcaster. That reel has never been right after that S$#thead, I don't even use it anymore because it sounds like a train wreak every time I cast it.

I remember when my Dad told us there were jewels inside the heads of them.  Of course, we didn't believe him.  So, I convinced my Dad to let us keep one once, just to see if he was right.  We got home, ripped it's head apart (that's the scientific term, right) and found the two white "stones" located somewhere behind the eyes.  Me being a 9 or 10 yr old, thought this was a great find.  He milked it.  That is, until the next time we went fishing, and I insisted on keeping everyone I caught.  Once we got home and I had myself about 15 sets of "flat pearls" he told me they were worthless.  The fish do make great fertilizer, and I was occupied for a few hours, at least.  Ahhh, that old man.

i would have to dig it up and scan it but its a drum so if no one believes me who cares right???

my biggest was below neville island on the ohio, 29" just shy of 13 lbs.  on a crank.  ive landed quite a few over 25 and 3-4 over 10 lbs on the scale.  sure give you a good tug.  not a junk fish in my book.  and if you ever see them toss a tube jig they will slam it like a smally.  also fresh crayfish will catch you every large drum in a 5 mile stretch of water.

    Gentlemen,
The major question is:  Are they real good to eat?  Some species of saltwater drum are pretty fair.  Or are they only good as sucker bait?

Clean fish take fillet and boil it until cooked. Place in the refrigerator over night. Eat with cocktail sauce taste like lobster. I once heard an old timer refer to it as poor mans lobster.

    Katty,

I think he was refering to Burbot, not Sheephead.

I have no doubt that state record Sheeps are tossed back into the lake, and record Perch are filleted, every summer.
