My walleye needs chemo!
I caught a huge eye today over 30" and it was full of large red tumors. It was fricken ugly. I tossed it back. The guy at the bait shop said it was where eels attached themselves? That does not sound right to me and these did not look like bites, they looked like protruding tumors. What's the deal?

It was a Hammermill fish...LOL Seriously, we haven't seen a fish like that since 3 years ago and we catch tons of fish every season. They're very rare. Back then, the marine biologists for the PFC were talking about it. It's a skin/scale disorder and doesn't effect muscle. Haven't seen on of these in the past 2 years at all. They're like humans...not everyone has hemmoroids, but there's a select few who do  However, yesterday we had an 8 pounder with a lamprey eel stuck to it. We killed the eel and the customer ate the fish!

I caught this one at woodcock. People told me it was a skin disorder and it was fine to eat. I released it.

Could it be VHS ???
I myself would've kept it and brought to someone to have it checked out.This VHS stuff is bad news.

I landed several suckers in Elk creek this spring with tumors on them. A couple of the tumors were very big.

I wonder if they should be chucked into the weeds when there caught? I'm thinking a genetic disorder or something? In other words, if the stay in and spawn, will they pass it on to the fry?

Do that and you will get a nice citation for "illegal disposition." Use your head Finster and do the right thing. Chucking fish into the weeds is really a poor example of sportsmanship.

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia = VHS. Caught several with it last year. Not a problem to eat; I'm not dead yet, just cut out around the infected area. Also caught some fall steelies in front of trout with similar tumors/open sores.

The open sores, and tumors, are NOT symptomatic of VHS.

Spoonchucker: What are the symptoms? I have never seen a report on them but if you look at the words, hemorrhage is a hemorrhage. Septicemia is like septic, so sounds like a septic ulcer type sore to me?

I'll try to look up the info I had. It is basically internal bleeding, and not always visible. Look red patches similar to spider veins, or bloodshot eyes. None of the info I was given at the seminar indicated open sores, or tumors.

We got a fair number of 'eyes last year w/ open sores, not tumor like growths, but open sores. Also got a few steelies trolling in front of the creek mouths w/ similar looking open sores. We had never seen it before so we attributed it to VHS.

The open sores, are most likely Lamprey scars.
