Planer boards

I finally go a mast for my 17' Lund and now need boards.  I obviously can't fish the big waves like bigger boats or fish large numbers of rods.  Which brands work best for smaller boats?

You can build them yourself as well... that's what we did with ours.  You can look up plans on the internet and they are fairly easy to make.

That's good advice build them.  Wayyyy cheaper and really pretty easy. You should be able to get them in the rough form in a couple hours.

I built mine and they work fine. I found the plans on the internet. I built a single board set. I also have a small 18' boat. I would have liked to build a larger double or tripple board set, however I also needed to be able to store them.

I was gonna make some til I priced out material was $50 and plus my time, go ahead and price out a 10 foot board of redwood $80. Spar is pretty expensive if you use cheaper wood plus a 10 foot board of w/e you decide its $50  easy to make them. Buy them for $99 at Poor Richards they work very well and they are redwood

Aren't the wood one kind of heavy?  I was considering the Riviera foam filled ones since they collapse.  Does anyone have any experience with these?

Why do you need redwood?  One word, PINE.  It's still cheep(relatively speaking).  I made a set a few years ago and it cost me a grand total of $35, and that included the aluminum flat stock and misc. hardware that I used to connect the boards.  The biggest problem that I had was to find someone that had a radial arm saw to cut the compound angle on the front.  The set that I made looked almost identical to the ones at pooor richards.

Thanks for the help guys.  I borrowed a set of wood ones and bought a pair of Rivieras.  They fit in my rod locker which I like.  If the wood ones work better I might make a set later.

Ehhhh...I had a set of home made ones which I got plans for off this site actually.  I constructed them of pine and tried to tweak them to no avail.  At bes they performed marginally.  I eventually invested in a set of Big Jon Otter Boats and wow do they keep the planer line tight!  They fair well in all water conditions.  If I would have had springs on my pulleys or snubbers of some sort I wouldn't have hesitated to fish 4 footers with the boards out.  Releases were much cleaner than with my homemade boards where the lines were tight only half the time at best.  And if I wanted to check the line for some reason one twitch of the rod tip and my rubber band would snap.  They are expensive but well worth it!!  Good luck with whatever you go with.

How about cedar, I saw no mention of cedar and hear cedar works well.  Any thoughts.  I'm making my own set and have some cedar stock here at home.  Thanks...

p.s. - Have a buddy who will sell me some Otters for $75...should I go for them instead?

If you go with cedar don't use the kind you see on log cabins, it's to soft & splits easy. Go with the kind furniture is made of. They will last a long time. Timmy just made a cedar chest & might have some extra scraps left.

If you can buy a set of Otter's for $75 you'd be crazy not to go with them.  They cost more than that new individually.  As far as wooden boards goes, i've heard that redwood is the best but I believe it's tough to come by.  The denser the wood the better.  Denser boards will sit down more in the water and have more pull which is what you want to keep those lines tight.
