If you can find it.....buy it.  Gudebrod discontinued it last year.  I got that spool 2 years ago.

skip,

I normally use a little bit of cooking oil to check the color of wraps. You have to be careful that you don't get it all over the place and that you clean it up well, but it gives a depth of color that you don't get by wetting the wraps with water or solvent.

Also, on these dark green blanks (I assume that's a rainshadow) there are some other thread choices too. Black works just fine if you like the understated look. My 6'6" 2 wt is green with black wraps and black guides. The green that Scott posted is the most common. You can use dark green or medium green to the same effect. Olive green looks good too and is a slightly different shade. The browns aren't my favorite on the green blanks, but some people like them. I don't use color preserver at all really, so I try to have matching shades. A slightly different option is gudebrod gold with no color preerver. It goes to a brown/olive color when wet. Finally, garnet looks good to some people. It goes to a very dark maroon on a dark green blank.

Of course those are the Gudebrod colors. Angler's Workshop has a great selection of silk thread with some other color options that I really like. Granger green is a very olive kinda color that looks great on green or brown blanks. Antique gold is a yellow/orange color that goes well on brown blanks to make an olive/brown look with no CP. I think that is what I just used on my brown 6 wt (the label has fallen off the spool). They also have some unique purple shades and red shades that go great on grey blanks.

Thanks
Rick

Good choice, I also like the bottom one.

In for the final pictures.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Oh, that is a shame. I realy like seeing the creative handiwork that people are capable of.

I've been getting a strong urge to build another rod. The Rainshadow is at the top of the list too. I cast one a friend of mine built a few times, and they are sweet.

It turned out excellent...this is my first fly rod...I've got alot to learn...I'm probably going to be a hack for the first season - and doing alot of backyard casting during the summer - but I will be whipping the water to a froth in 09....

Thank you so much again Skip for such a fine piece of craftsmanship...I am truly not worthy of a rig as nice as this...

And thank you to fishUSA for thier great service when I ordered the reel & line....

The reel is a Redington Rise Series 7/8 w/Rio Steelhead WF7F line...

Here is a picture of the completed rod...

Bill was kind enough a couple of years ago to give me some Wood Duck feathers for fly tying so I thought I would incorporate a couple of feather inlays into the rod....

I hope you enjoy your rod for many years Bill
