Tagged one on Halloween

I made it out to my favorite rut stand yesterday at about 5pm. On my way in, I laid a scent trail with some doe in heat scent, and I also touched up a scrape near the stand, which a buck had been visiting nearly every day since I made it a week ago.

At about 6 pm, I heard a sound coming from behind, which I figured would be a squirrel. I turned around to see a shooter making a scrape about 25 yards behind me. I slowly stood up, clipped on my release, turned to my right, and waited for the deer to take the few steps I would need to get a shot. After he took a few steps, he noticed the scent trail I made on the way in, and started to follow it in the opposite direction. After he went about 40 yards on the scent trail, I blew on my true talker, and he immediately came straight back toward me puffed up like he was ready for a fight.  As he got to 20yds, I drew and got ready to shoot. As I was positioning myself for the shot, he caught some movement out of the corner of his eye. He stopped, and stared at me for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually, he looked away, changed direction and walked behind me at about 18 yards. I was able to turn to the other side of the tree, and make a quartering away shot. He dropped within sight.

I haven't measured the spread yet, but i'm guessing it's around 18-19". It's a 7 point.

I know this is a terrible picture.....actually, it's a picture of a picture, if that makes any sense. I can't get the SD card out of my camera, so in order to post the pic on here, I had to take the picture of the screen on the camera with my blackberry, and email it to myself.....I'll get the clear pic posted on here in a day or 2.

    Thanks guys.

This is the fourth year in a row that I killed a buck from that same tree. The edge of a 10 year old clear cut is within shooting range, it seems the bucks cruise the edge, scent checking the bedding does. This buck, however, seemed to be checking his scrapes.

Congrats bud!!  Friday and Saturday were great in the deer woods.  I saw a bunch of bucks ans several nice shooters.  Most were seeking but did see two shooter bucks chasing a hot doe Saturday.

Yeah, it's very close to the one I killed last year. In my area many of the bucks look alike. Even the mature bucks that are harvested still have the same basic shape, and are mostly 8 points.  I could take a pic of the last several bucks killed on our ground and some of them look like twins.

Has anyone else noticed deer with similar racks in the area they hunt?

    Dan,

That's a better picture.  Congrats again.

I would also like to get to Erie, but our plant just announced a two week shutdown around Christmas so all of the vacation I was saving for Erie and chasing birds will now be needed to cover that time period.

It might be possible to go then, but I think Duncsmom is thinking about fishing a little further south during that time -- like South Andros.  But who knows.

I have noticed that there are four distinct antler types/shapes/sizes where I hunt and have posted about it before -- only to be told I just didn't get why they were that way.

I read an article in deer & deer hunting (I think), that mentioned there are areas that are predominantly 8pt areas, or 10 pt areas, etc... The area I hunt hasn't had a deer bigger than a 10 point killed on it, since before I was born. The biggest being a 10 point that scored in the 140's (killed 4 years ago), and a 9 point in the 130's (killed 5 years ago). I wish I had pics of those to show. I may be able find some pics and scan them.

Way to go Dan.  I see plenty of steelheading in the immediate future for you....

I see alot of bucks from the area I hunt that have very similar characteristics.  For some reason alot of the 8's take there are very high tight racks.  The 10's I have seen always seem to have very long brow tines compared to other areas.

Im blowing off school friday in hopes of catching up to a buck this weekend in 2B.  We watched a 150"+ buck chase a doe right into the area I plan to hunt while spotting saturday night.

Yeah, carpooling sounds good. It doesn't matter to me who drives. My outback will probably burn less gas though.

    Thanks guys!

I took a walk by the tree I killed this one from today while I was turkey hunting. I watched a buck chase a doe within about 40 yards of the tree. I also noticed another buck is using the mock scrape I made close the tree. After seeing how bad it had been torn up, I had a feeling there was more than one buck visiting it. Now I know for sure.
