European Mounts

Has anyone done this?

I'm doing this for my 8 pt this year, and yesterday I started the process.

I cleaned the head as best I could, from the skin, to muscles, to brain, to everything.

Absolutely gross at first, but it's amazing what the body can get used to. Didn't effect me after 10 minutes.

3 hours I worked on this guy, with a knife and Box cutter.
I put him in boiling water with a tad of bleach in it.
Bottom Jaw is gone too, there's still some "material" under his head, where the jaw would connect.

My question is, Has anyone ever done this? Any tips on how to get the last 15 % of crap off him?

I've heard lye, or in boiling hydrogen peroxide. Any tips would help.

And, I'd like this done by the time I'm dead. So I'm not burying it.

burrying it sucks, hang it in a tree where bees and everything can get at it, will be done fast.

Pay to have it done or buy whatever those bugs are they taxidermist use..   My dad's 7 point from last year is still outside.  Still crap all over it.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Don't boil it...  It will not last nearly as long as it should.  Dermistads are the best way to go.  You can take it to a taxidermist that uses them or buy them yourself.  They work quick and effectively, while not compromising the skull

i had one done last year by a taxidermist and he used the beetles and then but a clear coat on it after bleaching the mount turned out really good definatly better than the homemade one

    Thanks skippy.

This being my first buck I want to do everything myself. Something to be proud of.

I heard boiling it compromises the integrity of the skull. The strength of the bone.

It's just, Well I guess there tendons and ligaments. They're right under the skull, where to bottom jaw would have connected if I hadn't ripped if off like a viking.
I boiled it in water, with a tad of bleach. The scent of it cooking was unreal. I actually almost yaked.

I guess I just gotta pick at it.

I have boiled every one since 84 and they are all fine.  I do want to get me a beetle collection though.

Better too far back, than too far forward.
