I have used several weight rods Minimum I would use would be a 5 wt 9 ft.   But Ideally a 7 wt at least 9 foot long

I got that G.Loomis 8'6 5wt and was hoping that would be alright. Im also considering buying the  St. Croix  7'6 6wt that fishusa is offering.  I want to be comfrotable while fighting them and now have to worry about snapping a rod.

On a side note went fishing with K16 yesterday at the paradise and he was using a 4'6" 2wt and hooked into a nice rainbow. Lets just say its no longer usable might be fixable. his exact words were " Guess thats what I get for ****ing some people off when catching a smaller fish would of been alot better then what just happend"  figured you guys would like to have heard that.

I like a 11ft. 6wt. single spey,it's easier to mend line with the longer rod. I had a little old italian lady put a hex on him. hahahahaha

I use a 9'6" 6wt & a 9' 8wt.  Both do the job very well.  I mainly use the 6wt, but occasionally the 8wt.  The 8wt acts more as my bass rod than anything.  Good luck, it's a blast!

7 1/2 ft could be long enough but longer would be easier for Erie nymph type fishing.
6 or 7 wt. would be ideal
     8 1/2 ft minimum
Longer is better in most cases for nymphing.
Shorter if you like to fish streamers.

I wouldn't fish a 5 wt, especially considering how crowded it can get and the fact that you'll be playing a fish much longer, thus creating a hairy situation for those around you.

I fish a 9 foot 8 wt myself. Makes playing and controlling a big steel a simpler task. It's also doubled as a carp, bass and pike rod for me.

As far as Erie steelheadin goes...I've fished 9' 5wt, 10' 6wt and 10' 7wt  NO DOUBT! my Scott 10' 6wt is my fav It has just the right flex and the legnth makes for easier drag free drifts.
