Tough conditions

Newbie fly fisherman here.  Started last year at this time, and have faired pretty well since then.

Went yesterday and hit a local swpa stream, which was stocked a few weeks ago.  The water is low and clear but I found a nice hole with a dozen trout, but I just couldn't get the right presentation going.  The water was also very slow, so I was having a hard time getting a good drift with anything sub-surface.  I also think the weight on my line was spooking the trout, and I only had one small shot on.

What methods do you suggest for slow, low and clear water?

Sometimes the water is so low and so clear that nothing helps.  That's what I experienced Saturday.

Same here.  Bout the only thing that works is bait on the bottom, and even that can be hit or miss in these conditions.  Still, I was fishing through last week in the same low clear water, and I was doing okay.  Not great, but much better than the weekend.  These leaves have made it a pain in the****too.

A weighted streamer. Tie it in to the fly at the bench.  Put it way beyond where you want to fish, then strip and jig it through the area that you want to fish.

I've been doing that for a few weeks now and it has worked very well with maribou minnows.

active presentations are about the only chance then. If there is no flow at all, you can put on a heavily weighted nymph and crawl it along the bottom. If there is a little bit of flow you can put on a light nymph and very slowly hand retrieve it. Same with streamers, only you can vary the speed more and get some reaction strikes.

Either way it is tough going and slow fishing. Lively materials are a must, i.e. marabou, rabbit fur, etc. Leave the deer hair at home.

    thanks,

I appreciate it guys, I was clueless that day.  Thankfully since my post it's rained pretty good, but I'll give your advice a try ,next time things get rough.
