New Gear Reviews

Any of you guys try new gear this season that has worked well.....or not so well? I'm talking about broadheads, arrows, bows, clothing, treestands, etc.....

I started shooting G5 tekans this year. I killed a big doe with one on saturday. Clean pass through with over an inch and a half entrance and exit holes. Didn't even have to track the deer, it only went about 25 yards.

The new Bowtech 101st is a little slower than I anticipated..Only shooting 280.. Was expecting around 300. Seems to be a bit heavy also...

Rip cord drop away. I am impressed with it and it has not failed yet, came on a Mathews Drenalin I bought barely used which I am also happy with and it is light compared to what I used to have.

Rage 2-blades were my only new equipment for the season.  I found the broadheads I will be shooting indefinately.  I wish I would have taken some pics of the entrance wound on the doe I shot; it was downright scary.  It left about a 3" gash and passed through 2 lungs and stuck in the ground behind the deer at 30 yards.  The blood trail was unreal.

Shooting a new bow this year a P.S.E  X fORCE still shooting the 100gr spitfires all i can say is amazing i was going to shoot rage this year but didn't. I will just continue to shoot the 100Gr spitfires.....Amazing the blood trail is amazing Ray Charles could follow it. The 8 pt i shot this year was quartering away hit him the last rib back and exited the front right armpit....and the arrow was buried in the earth 3 inches. The shot was 37 yards on the button. Buck ran 40 yards and crashed he didn't know what hit him...till he fell over dead. I swear bye 100gr spitfires 9 buck nine years in a row and not one blade very failed to open. Plus i have 7 used 100's that killed a buck and you still could screw them on a new shaft and use them again, not a blade broke or bent amazing. But do have two heads with smashed trophy tips but blades are still great shape. I guess the trophy tips don't like front should blades. I shoot a p.s.e X force new bow this year was shooting a p.s.e carrera  with xx75  2315 lights 4 inch vanes 5% offset  and i still shoot the same shaft have for 10 plus years now and i have now to different times have smashed through both front shoulders with the spitfires have the heads to prove they never broke. But they are twisted a little. Love that broad head.

Ditto on the Rage 2 blades my entrance and exit holes were MASSIVE.

I bought a new treestand last night.  Summit OpenShot Deluxe.  I've got a few days of altering to do it however.  Gonna look like a different animal once I'm done.

Also, predator camo in fall gray.   I needed new clothing (cause I'm a fatass), so I figured I'd get one of the best breakup patterns for treestand hunting.  I won't be wearing it until the leaves fall, but it is awesome.

I got a long can too.  The primos' cans are the best calling tool for the deer I hunt.  I usually have about 3-4 cans with me in November.  The cold can make them expand and not work correctly.  Keep a hand warmer around them.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

I've used a loggy lite for the past 13 years.  I've grown to know it, with the ability to climb a tree without a sound. This an essential part of my hunting, as I need to get into or close to a buck's bedroom to get a crack at one.  The adjustment to a new stand is not an easy road in the middle of the season.  I put the stand up on a tree last night and boy is it different.  Not in a bad way however.  I will not have to hug the tree anymore, which not only lays scent, but it sucks, especially when the tree is wet.  Not to mention the loggy lites aren't the most comfortable.  This going to take some getting used to.  I should be able to spend longer hours in the tree, after I make some major seat adjustments.  We'll see.

Local Vet. Dr. Piper and Chiropractor Dr. Barnes went on a Canadian bear hunt last spring with Rage 3 blade.  Both got shots, neither arrow penerated past the skin.   I know both of these guys, pretty well.   They got refunds and Rage told them they should have used the 2 blade.

I bought a few of the cheap Bid Dog hanger stands from dunhams. They're actually pretty comfortable, I'm a bigger guy. and at 6'3 230, I can comfortably sit in the seat without my hips being pushed inward. And The shooting Rest is easily removed so my knees don't hit it.

They're Easy to hang, not heavy and I paid 60 bucks for each one, that's including military discount.

I have always gone with 2 blades since I went to mechanicals, because of the penetration difference.

Im real into the Red Head Clothing anymore.  It just seems of higher quality and better price than Cabelas stuff.  I bought the Red Head Endura Skin Base Layers and think they are pretty good I walked in Wednesday night and it was HOT stuff kept me fairly cool and dry.  I also bought the Red Head Expedition Fleece Jacket and pants...AWESOME Stuff Very warm even when wet...I bought last year the Red head Bone Dry insulated camo and it too is very comfortable, quiet, waterproof, breathable, and was decent priced.

Bought a gorilla hang-on and climbing sticks. It is the gorilla stand with the mesh seat can't remember the name of the model . Got the stand at sportsmen warehouse for $99 bucks and it is pretty comfortable. the sticks were bought from dicks for $29 bucks. The sticks are nice but the straps kinda bites. They are just the kind you pull tight and are hard to pull tight enough. So i will the to buy the ratchet straps.  Wife bought me a safety system vest it is nice but very restricting when trying to shoot to the right or behind you. I'm right handed and where i hunt the deer can come from any direction and of coarse the first time I tried the vest all the deer came from the right and never went in front of me or where I could get a shot. Back to the old waist strap for me. If I was to have a fall it will stop me from hitting the ground but it will hurt the waist I'm sure.                                                       SilverKype your not kidding the loggy lite are very uncomfortable I had one many years ago and went up a tree early one morning in the rain and got up to where i needed to be and got seated and the wind started to blow pretty good and the next thing I knew i started to slide down the tree and let me tell you that feeling really SUCKED !!!!!   And yes it was a smooth bark tree and i should have knew better but the instructions said it works great on any tree  DO NOT BELIEVE THAT they will put the scare in to you when your sliding down the tree, Back then I never wore a safety strap of any kind.  Now I only use a rivers edge climber that has a cutting edge. Yes it does make up the bark and the land owner does not have a problem with the marks. I have been hunting the same tree for over en years and the tree is as healthy as ever. Every 2-3 years just have to reset the adjustments on the climber

I found the flaw in the Rage broadheads. They are weak right where that o-ring sits. Took a shot a turkey yesterday, the whole **** head snapped off. No more mechanicals for this guy.

I filled my buck tag yesterday with the G5 tekan. This is deer #2 for the same head. Just had to replace the rubber o-ring and blades. The tip is still very sharp, and there is no damage to the broadhead. Nice entrance and exit holes, and the deer dropped in sight.

My friend shot a groundhog before archery came in with an aftershock archery broadhead... UNBELIEVABLE exit hole. It just about cut the groundhog in half. They open after they go in so the penatration is always phenominal. He shot a doe the second week and she fell within sight. The diameter is very large something like 2 and 1/4" or so.

Im a RAGE-o-holic!  I got a 8-pt in WV this year, total distruction, went maybe 35 yards, enormous gash!  Greatest broadhead ever my friend, the gash was unbelieveable!!

jlh was saying, **** breaks when there is a bunch of pieces.
