I think if you are using the correct size rod weight to the fly and fish and it is a quality blank you won't need a shock tippet. Also try using a higher quality tippet like Wulff. Can't beat it. If you have a cortland ct or simialr broom of a stick then a shock tippet is a very acceptable way to manage the lack of flex in the first half of the rod. You can use a $1.00 trout snubber from the sporting goods store to even see if you like the feel before you commit to the shock.
