Steelies

I fished the Grand River yesterday. There was a guy slamming the steelies with a fly rod. The guy would not say what he was using. I could not see what he was using. I went today with the fly rod and used wooly buggers, streamers, egg paterns, and egg sucking leaches. I had no luck. What kind of patterns produce this time of the year? I am new to fly fishing....

I use sucker spawn, egg sucking leeches, and bead head woolly buggers for the most part. I'll generally start use a bigger fly like an egg sucking leech then move to a bead head woolly bugger then if they both fail I'll move to sucker spawn fished under a float and target current breaks. This time of year you have to find where the fish are lying and move around a lot. Generally there isn't a whole lot of fish in the streams and they'll be in specific areas like the holes if it's crowded if it's not crowded areas like tailouts with holding areas like a downed tree or rocks.
