Flies for Fall

Well, I thought I'd try to maybe share a pattern that I love to use for trout.. Apoligizes for the camera, I guess that's what happens when you get water in it and it's pretty cheap.

This fly is a dry, one of my favorites! It's the Spent Caddis, tied by AK Best. Obviously it's a imitation of a dead Caddis, though you don't need to use it in a hatch. I've caught around 30 fish on this fly this year, even with delayed harvest fish who sometimes refuse nature flies. Not much to it, consists of partridge soft hackle, tan dubbing, tan 2/0 thread, size 14 dry fly hook, and neck hackle. Here it is..

That's about it. As you can tell the picture quality is pretty bad with hackle.. But oh well. This fly, like I said, really is great with trout. Even with heavier hatches it'll work well. I've caught all types of fish on this pattern, but trout especially..

Also I forgot to mention that when you've tied off the fly you'll need to cut off the bottom half of the hackle. think of it as a circle cut in half vertical... The bottom part is cut off. Great floating even without floatant.

Flyfisherman, in the second picture from the bottom, the wings look different. Is that tied with different material? just curious.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

LOL. I'll have to try that one at the fly fishing only area in Brookville. I tie one similar to that to match the little black caddis hatch in late April, early May.

Same here. I fish some what poor hatch creeks (Slippery Rock no big secret..) and there's either the White Fly hatch in August, or you find something in early Spring that may be coming off. Shadowing casting this fly over a pool for acouple of minutes the fish really do key up on it. Though I'm not much of a dry fly fisherman I would compare this fly to the adams, light Cahill, and everything in between. It's easy to tie (especially with beginners material..) and great to use. Fly fishing only areas I've used this in the most...

Trim the bottom of the hackle on the third one and it's money!

Yeah, that's how I tie it most of the time. I like to trim off the bottom hackle so it rides lower.

I tie this same fly using orvis wing material(synthetic sheet), holds up well.
