Inexperience Salmon Fisherman....Advice PLease!!!

Well i plan on making a trip to oak orchard or one of the creeks in New York that host runs of Kings Cohos Browns Steelheads. I am a sophmore at Penn State and my friend and I plan on traveling up for a weekend. We do not plan on leaving for another 2 weeks at the earliest. My question to all of you experienced guys is what should be our best bet to catch some of these monsters. All we are using is spin tackle. I know that eggs work well, but what do you guys think would be the best location to try to catch some salmon. We both hammer steelhead in Erie almost every weekend, but they are different from the Kings.

Thanks very much

I own property on the Little Salmon River in Texas, N.Y., no fish, water warm and low.  I recommend at this time of year since the lake is still warm (74 F at 9mile point) and the lake has not "rolled over", that you consider some lake fishing on a charter.  If that's not in the realm then best bet will be Oswego River from the "river walk", the Salmon River at the mouth of the river near Port Ontario, the Big Sandy and the Black River in Watertown.  those are the early producers.  As for tackle, spinning gear is fine with fake egg or various color spong depending on water clearity and sun/cloudy days.  Bright colors for dark and subdued colors on bright days, less "spooking" that way.  the weather has started to turn cool (40s and 50s at nite) 50s to 70s days, more rain coming, don't forget your waders and especially 'corkers' (cleats).

fish have started moving up the rivers now 9/19/08.  I recommend you charter a "river drift boat" type trip now.  There are charter posters at every tackle shop, diner and power pole.  All charter types up here are licensed and most are good people to work with.  The charter guide you get depends on the river you want to fish.  All the waters carry the same type of runs (Kings, Browns, Coho, Steelhead and native rainbows), Skamaineon(spell check?) are usually done by now.  If you like to bank fish there are areas on almost every river and creek where you can get in, watch for the yellow on brown signs for public access.  If you play your cards right there are alot of folks who will let you access their land to get to some creeks.
