Jerkbait, formerly made by windell, called the "Muskie Hunter" in chartruse perch, however that doesn't matter much because there is no paint left on it.
Better too far back, than too far forward.

Seems the ones with no paint left on them are the ones that work better. Shutup i just bought a bass tracker 17 fter so i am getting back into the muskie thing. I never was into it super heavy duty, but the more i see the toothy critters the more gets my blood pumping. I am in the process having two custom rods begin built as we speak. A gentleman out of Wis, is building me a rods called jaw breaker rods. Doing one in a 6 ft 6 xt heavy and a 8 fter in extra heavy going with 2 Tica caiman 205 reels, spooled with 80 # power pro. I don't know how much trolling i'll be doing as it boars me so i know i'll be doing alot of casting. So shutup i fish alot of the Allegheny river here in kittanning water is stained have any suggestions for some lures that might help me get started for the fall. Thats my problem now choosing lures. You seem to know your shi! about muskie fishing any help or info be greatly appreciated. Thats if you care to help out if not i understand. So if you like to shoot me a Im me in my box that be great my friend. Thanks Pin_drifter

Hey Pin, it's not really a matter of what lure to use more so than knowing what colors are better on the lakes/rivers you're fishing. You said the water was off color/stained so you may want to go with bright colors or black that stand out against the water color. The clearer the water the more natural the color should be. This can make a big difference on certain days, other times they'll just eat. I make some baits and when I paint them I think about the lakes I fish and what kinds of forage are present... Red Bar Perch - a great late summer pattern when the water is off color Find me a lake without perch! Rainbow's are like hotdogs for muskies Carp are an easy meal for a big fish! Big oily Alewives = Big fat muskies!

Thanks DB. I picked it up as a hobby a few years back and it's turned into an addiction. I love to make baits, from tying size 24 midges to making 11" musky plugs. It's always awesome to catch something on a handmade bait. These guys troll up to 6 mph, and are made from basswood, hand cut and sanded to shape, carved gills, sealed, painted, and coated in 3-4 coats of epoxy.

dealinsteel those are awesome looking baits!!! Fantastic job on them!! You make an topwaters?? And as far as my favorite baits for esox anything musky innovations makes or joe bucher. And you can't go wrong with j 13 rapalas and the new x rap shad in the 5.25 inch models, and the good old faithful F18 rapalas either. Natural colors such as perch, silver, brown. Firetiger has its moments too.

You bet bud, once a fish gets above 40 or so inches, they do a number on the lures. Dealin thats one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, I bet catching a trout on a hand tied fly is sweet, I couldn't imagine the feeling you get, catching a Musky on a hand crafted lure.
