smallmouths in salmon river??

I am under the impression that there is a good viable population of smallies in the river..My question:if so,has anyone scoffed up one of these fish during steel time, considering a jillion kinds of lures are used??? You'd think if they were there, somebody would have caught one and commented.....frank

Frank, from past experience Smallmouth come into the river in May and migrate upstream.Years ago on my last trip in May we caught more bass then Steel.I don't think they stay in the river through the summer but really don't know, never fished the river past May.

Some stay around most of the summer---I've caught em as early as March.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

I catch smallies en masse all summer in the river along with soem dandy resident trout and presumably wild steelhead.  As soon as the first king enters they seem to disappear.

    Average size is 10"-12."
