snake eating brown trout

was out on my favorite trout stream saturday and think i might of seen a big brown(at least24") eat a small water snake(about 10"). the snake was on a log over the stream and fell off into the hole where the fish lives, it started under the mountain laurel, and that is where i lost sight of it. next thing i know there is one hell of a take where i saw the snake last.can't say for sure but i'll take my odds in vegas. now, does anybody know of a good pattern for tying a snake.

the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

the more i thought about it i figured i might as well buy a rubber snake at the dollar store and texas rig it with a 3/0 hook and my bass rod.

I've seen Bass take small snakes but never a trout...

but I'm sure they would be a source of protein for growing large antlers...

A 5" Zoom Fluke on a 5/0 worm hook, a 4" X-Rap, or a 4" White Tube with a 1/8 oz Darter head might be good ways to find out exactly what is in the pool.  You might not catch him, but there is a good chance that you will see him...  Another thought (one I have done) is to get a scuba mask and go for a swim.  You would be amazed at what you will see.

i ve seen him many a time, he's in a pool right behind the log in a guy's backyard. the trick is to sneak up and not spook him. unfortuneatly there isn't a lot of casting landing areas with all the mountain laurel and such. he's got a nice home. one other point when i catch a smaller trout out of that hole he chases the trout around like a musky almost like he was going to eat the smaller fish. never saw this with a trout before.

Give a bright red San Juan worm a try. Trust me. What I would do is weigh it down, this heat is pretty unbearable so they're probably not surfacing and throw it out. Make a flicking motion with your wrist, with it being bright red you'll definately get the fishes attention. If that doesn't work and they are surfacing give a Stimulator a go. A dry fly but one thats known to catch fish in August. Good luck.

    nut,
Go big with a streamer type fly.   Let it drift down past him and then retrieve it up just out of his normal range.  I've found black/silver/white; and brown/red/white  (from top to bottom of the flies) to be the most effective for really big trout.  lately I've been tying; and having some of my friends who tie way better than me tie, a fly that looks like a small rainbow trout.  Don't get many hits but it works well for BIG trout.  It's tied on a #6 extra long shank hook.
I have been preaching the "GO BIG" philosophy to Little "J" fishermen for years.  Works good on the Cumberland too.  Going to try it for one day up in Erie for steelhead this year.

There is a saltwater fly called a velvet eel.  4-5 inches long and has barbell eyes.  That would probably work.

If he was that big, I'd suggest the following.  Just jam a hook in your back and have your buddy lower you in with a crane.

In addition to using a snake imitation.. You also could use a size 16 Jumbo John. After reading and answering your question some 8 days ago I was talking to my cousin, also a fly fisherman. Down by the Lehigh he said he was almost in the same situation. He had a big brown, in a pretty deep tribuatry, he thought eat a snake. In talking more about it I couldn't help but think about the Jumbo John. Called me last night and told me he'd gotten him on the Jumbo size 16 black. Give it a shot. Good Luck

Try using/tying up a Double Bunny. You can always change the color combos
