Another Line Q

I am preparing to order some fishing line from cabela's to spool up my new trolling setups.   I am pretty new to the lake erie walleye trolling game so I'm not sure what I should get.  I've already decided on braid so no reason to bring up the mono v braid fight here.  If a few people could give their favorite brand then it'd really help me out here.  Right now I'm leanin towards Cabela's Ripcord Si purely on the basis of cost, but I'm very open to opinions.

Thanks

i use fire line on reel  and 17 lb. mono leader using dipsys with crawler harness or spoons or plugs i have had no problems hooking up or losing fish. i also use snubbers between dipsy and leader.

I have not done a lot of trolling but powerpro is my favorite all around line.
Thinner line has a lot less drag.

    http://www.fishusa.com/PowerPro-Braided-Spectra-Fiber-Line_p.html?i=DCABFB3458B24D1D9B55536221C9E4B4

PowerPro Braided Spectra® Fiber Line is not affected by salt water, UV rays, or most chemicals and solvents. The life of PowerPro line is much longer than monofilament lines (as a rule of thumb, it lasts five times the life of monofilament line). In fact, depending on how much and where you fish, PowerPro could last two to three fishing seasons or longer. With PowerPro, you have more fish in the boat, and less bait lost – you’ll find that you’re actually money ahead.

Spectra Fiber is composed of polyethylene, a very slick plastic. In fact, the only material that is slicker than Spectra is Teflon. Spectra, combined with PowerPro’s Enhanced Body Technology, makes a rounder and smoother line, which is gentler on rod guides than the older style braids.

Spectra has a specific gravity of 0.98 g/cc – just a hair lighter than water. Unlike heavier nylon and Dacron lines that sink, PowerPro will tend to stay at the surface. This means that you’ll get faster control of your fish after a strike with less belly in the line.

    • Allows for longer, smoother casts
    • Enhances handling on any reel
    • Superior knot performance
    • Resists burying in the spool
    • Near zero stretch
    • Incredible strength - 10X stronger than steel
    • No reel memory
    • Won't cut guides

Power Pro is great......T.U.F Line is just as good as well but harder to find.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Thanks guys!  Sounds like powerpro gets the nod.   I have had terrible luck with it on my catfish setup, seems like the rocks in my local river are too much for it.  But maybe It'd do better in open water.  I might buy if I can find a deal.  For some reason Im thinking gander mtn has some T.U.F. line on sale. I'll have to look.
    Again thanks for the input.

Dicks has some new "invisible" Spiderwire braid on sale.  Never used it but have heard it's soft and very strong.  Since I put fluro leaders on my power pro braid this invisible braid might be a good idea.

Does braided line perform well in icy conditions like might exist now on the Erie Tribs?   Or should I stick with mono in this kind of weather?

Power Pro is the way to go, and look for it on the popular auction site . I have gotten 1,500 yard spools for less than $100. I use the 30# green, but my brother-in-law bought yellow 50# (not sure what he's planning on catchin') we've caught fish on both.

Braid freezes instantly in these conditions. Mono is the way to go for Winter.

I will be the only person that says I hate power pro. Had two bad batches of it and will never waste my money again. I am on 2 seasons of sufix braid and its the best I have used out of them all. I agree go to ebay and find a high feedback person. I bought 1500yards of 50lb for 125ish.

I didn't know sufix made a braid, where is it sold?   Maybe I've just overlooked it at Gander Mtn.     I love the Sufix mono.    What do you dislike about the Power Pro?

I have suffix braid on 2 rods and power pro on 8, no appreciable difference IMO. It is prone to cutting your fingers if you pull too hard though , you will NOT break it with your hands.

Bulldog I know that feeling all too well. LOL I use a welders glove now if I get snagged up to pull it.Tuna most any place will sell it but most will only sell the 150 yard and rarely a 300 yard spool of it.I got the 1500 yard version only because my reels hold over 500 yards of line on them.

Power pro I liked a lot when it first came out. To me the batches I did not like were kind of limp and not subtle like sufix is. Sufix now is kinda of like how power pro used to be.I still like spiderwires but prefer sufix over them. My power pro broke repeatedly many times with little pressure and the company sent me another new spool only to have the same issues. Some love it and thats fine but when you lose over 20 rigs in a day and many fish i decided to draw a line.May have been a freak thing for me to get two bad batches but won't find out about a 3rd.

i use power pro 300 yrds of 30 and 40 lb with 100 yards of 20 and 30 lb mono backing. 30 lb for erie and 40 lb for ontario. if your gonna get it way down put your dipsy on a wire line.

I have found NOTHING better that Jerry Brown Line one Spectra briad. I started off using 30lb fireline. it worked ok but it didnt last me. Then went to power pro and had alot of abrasion and breakage problems. then i tried daiwa samuri briad and it is terrible. Switch to JB Line one spectra solid braid in 30lb and WILL NOT buy anything else. Plus its guaranteed!!! any problems just contact them. they back there product 100% and actually answer the phone and email back.
    I picked up a 1200yrd spool for 89 bucks
heres a link about different spectra's out there
