    • Perch Rigs are similar to Crappie rigs in that they contain two to three hooks, spread Vertically from the line. The idea is that you will have one hook toward the bottom, and the next hook about 6 to 8 inches above that, and possible another hook 6 to 8 inches above that, so that you are fishing at slightly different depths for the perch. Sometimes, 6 or 8 inches makes a world of difference when perch fishing.
    • Spreaders consist of a metal wire that is spread in the shape of an upside down 'U'. On the bottom of each 'U' there are short leads, with spinners (optional) and hooks. There is a sinker placed in the middle of the 'U' to help get the spreader to the bottom, and keep it there. This device is mostly used for fishing the bottom, or a controlled distance from the bottom. For the record, there are also different kinds of spreaders that have three leads coming from a 'T' shaped base.
    • Sinker Rigging is similar to systems used for bass fishing. Basically, you tie a hook to the end of your line. You place a 1 to 4 ounce sinker between 10-18 inches from the hook, on the line. The rig is then dropped to the bottom, and vertically jigged from the bottom, or fished on the bottom.

I prefer using a line that doesn't stretch, such as Berkley Fireline.

Are you going out on one of the head boats?

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

I use 10lb powerpro line with a crappie rig or a double drop rig with #6 circle hooks and a 3/8 to 1/2 oz sinker.
Drop to the bottom and then bring up 1 or 2 turns. The boat rocking gives it a jigging action.
Often you will catch a perch while the bait is on the way down.
Non stretch line allows you to feel every nibble.
If there are 2 kind of minnows buy some of each, live are best but if they run out the dead ones also work pretty good.

Yeah, what they said! Last year was the first time I tried it, actually the first time I ever tried to fish water over 25'. All I can add is that I used one of my grafite jiggin rods with 6lb(I think) fireline,1/4oz twister lead head with about a 6" floro leader to an ice spoon tipped with a piece of crawler, and actually could feel a lot of the hits, 60' of water! Most took the ice jig. Just tossed as far as I could ,free lined to bottom and SLOW jigged it back. For sure will do it again!

You could always cut the extra hooks off or do as i did and cut it in half and add a new loop to the cut ends and your in business.

    3/4 oz drop shot

    1/2 is probably enough

" cut it in half and add a new loop to the cut ends and your in business. "
    I have done that

    Ugly Stik, 6'6", Light action.

The Shakespeare web site does not list them but while browsing in WalMart I checked the Ugly Stiks out and, to my suprise. they had them. The light action gives you the sensitivity you need to deal with the sometimes light bite.

I use crappie spreaders with a bell sinker on the bottom with minnows. Or you could use a "spreader" that most bait shops sell in the Erie area. Either way is ok, but you should try to fish at leat two lines per rod, this will double your chances and many times if you get into a big school of them you can get double headers. I've even had tripples with the crappie rig. I like yo use Fireline or another braided as my main line, its way more sensitive than mono, no stretch, lets you feel the slightest nibble. Tie in a swivel and attatch you rig to it.

Look at this site for some VERY NICE spreaders.

    www.crookedeye.com

The weight is molded right into the spreader. I think it will keep the spreader from all going to one end or the other when you have a single hookup.

I bought a couple to try since I was not real pleased with the Poor Richards spreader offerings.
