pymy or conneaut for big panfish

I am heading out on Thursday morning looking to get into some big bluegills or crappie.  Anyone have any luck at either recently.

Went to Conneaut lake with the panfishing very slow for us we saw another boat doing a little better, did manage several nice large mouths and a mystery fish that broke my line as I was trying to lift him into the boat.  Was approximately 18 inches long brownish in color and had some darker spots with a round tail.  It was not a bass, walleye, muskie, or catfish.  Would have loved to have landed him to attempt to identify it.  It looked to me to be a very large mudpuppy would this be possible.

That was it!  Are they plentiful in Conneaut, and how big do they get?
