Rep. Newcomb Announces Initial Passage of Pymatuning Legislation
House Sends Measure to Senate for Approval

COLUMBUS – State Representative Deborah Newcomb (D-Conneaut) announced today the Ohio House of Representatives approved her amendment to increase the horsepower limits for boats on Pymatuning Lake from 9.9 to 20.  Specifically, the amendment will:

Improve boater safety by permitting appropriately-rated motors for watercraft.
Remove current regulations that allow varying motor sizes and institute a flat rate that will streamline enforcement by state officials.
Benefit the local economy by increasing the number of tourist dollars flowing to area businesses.
Ensure the Pymatuning Lake Compact continues to be a cooperative effort between Ohio and Pennsylvania.

“I am pleased that my House colleagues supported this amendment,” Rep. Newcomb said.  “I talked extensively with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and I concluded that raising the horsepower limit was the best way to increase boater safety and enhance enforcement efforts for watercraft officers on Pymatuning Lake.”

The amendment passed with a unanimous vote after it was inserted into Senate Bill 271, a watercraft safety bill.  An unrelated emergency clause was included in the bill that will make the legislation effective immediately once it is signed by the governor.

“After meeting with officials from Pennsylvania and knowing the 2008 boating season was upon us, it seemed impossible to raise the horsepower limits in time for boaters to utilize 20 horsepower motors this year,” Rep. Newcomb said.  “However, it now appears that the increase will go into effect within the coming weeks.  This amendment will ensure the safety of all boaters and visitors to Pymatuning Lake.”

The legislation is expected to return to the Ohio Senate for final approval this week before being sent to Governor Strickland.
