Bait shops near Sharpsburg/Millvale/Aspinwall?
I'm looking for more bait shops along the stretch of 28 between around millvale and aspinwall. I know the millvale bait shop by the skate park is there, but they seem to be closed mondays and tuesday until summer starts up. The only other place I know of to get minnows or shiners is up in new kens past the turnpike entrance. Anyone know of any other places in that area? I'm not all that familiar with the area and just started fishing the river down there last year.

Ahh, now come to think of it I have seen that international angler place, but forgot about it. That's one the left hand side of freeport going toward waterworks from sharpsburg. They have minnows there I'm guessing? I haven't seen the memories place, I'll have to look that one up as well.

Thanks for the info as well fishinbug.
BTW... Fishing yesterday in Sharpsburg, water was a little fast and high but caught a few nice stripers. A buddy caught a nice 10 inch. Waiting for that water to slow for some better fishing down there though.

I don't belive International Angler sells minnows I could be wrong, I havent been their for years and it was all fly fishing. Their is a bait shop in sharpburgh downstream from the Highland Park Dam I think that is the memories one. I would try memories for bait before I would try International angler.

there is a new boat ramp in sharpsburg now. i think somewhere underneath where route 8 goes over the river

It's down 13th St. Might be another one in the makeing a little down stream from there also.

Hey NPL, I meant to ask. Your minnows up there at your shop seem to last forever when we get them from there (buddy of mine got a few dozen last night). Other places they seem to die off within an hour even with a soak in the water. How are you keeping your minnow so lively?

we usually only have problems when they go into spawning stage. we keep the water cold sometimes in the 30's and plenty of aeration. plus we try to get any dead ones out as soon as possible.

I've noticed how cold the water is, seems to work great. I've gotten them down in Millvale a few times and they seem to die off pretty quick. The water is always pretty warm though from what it seems like.
Is it your shop that's for sale up there or is that something else that the for sale sign is for out front?

yes our business is for sale(bait, tackle, snacks, drinks, bike rental, and ice house). no time anymore to run it. it is in my uncles name and was bought by my grandfather in 1948 and i manage it now. where is the bait shop in millvale?

The millvale shop is right down by the skate park down there, I think pittsburgh rowing is down there as well. If you go down through Millvale as if you were going to get on 28 south, you make a quick left under 28. It goes across the railroad tracks and its tucked in back there. I think it is reletively new.
Tried to stop there yesterday but they are closed mondays and tuesdays until summer I guess.
Good luck selling the shop, hopefully someone keeps it running as well as it has been.

Yep, I see the canoes there, so I guess you can get them there. Not sure if the canoes are actually affiliated with the bait shop, but they are there. There's some boat docks there as well. It's convenient to stop at when just dropping down to the river, but not when they aren't open every day!

Looks like I'll be fishing Lock 3 some time very soon!!! I have never been in there, but have seen it when getting gas after fishing. If she is always dressed like this, I might be "fishing" at Lock 3 a lot more. I've stopped in the bar right next to the bait shop, and thankfully the bartender and patrons were not in string bakinis...

Dam I used to go to big dogs a few years ago and they were never wore anything like that. A few times going to Shenanagans ( formally the Oregon) on Babcock I happened to go in on pimps and Ho's night and some of the bartenders were wearing barely nothing.
About the minnows lasting i've noticed anytime that the water is cold they seem to last longer. When ice fishing with shiners we never had to put them on air or change the water all day.

Looks like I may stop there although it's out of the way, seems like the scenery is much better!

u can forget the bait shop in millvale millvale would not extend jesses lease they want to put in a non profit org there so no more bait tackle, bikes, cool drinks or great service. i get off work at 7pm all i would have to do is call and jesse would stay there till i got there know have to drive further to get bait going to miss that bait shop

Lock 3 is the way to go out by Freeport road suckers fatheads shiners chubs etc. They have everything they sell good tackle and lures too.
