high point

If anyone is interested there is an article in todays somerset sunday paper about a recent survey at high point. sounded to me like decent size crappie and lousy sized perch. i haven't checked their (daily american) web site but it might also be on there.

Trouble is finding those decent size crappie.  I thought the article said there was nice size perch in there.  Maybe I am thinking of a different survey on a different lake.

This survey was  just done but it could be on the fish cimission site by now? I have no doubt there are some decent size perch in there but in my opinion the lake is overrun with 3 inch perch that can hide fairly safely in all the weeds. travis caught quite a few that size jigging thru the ice this year.

They did mention the possibility of lowering it for weed control in the future but said there are problems in the tower that must be fixed fist. That has only been a problem for 7 or 8 years now but maybe one of these years they will decide to fix the problem. maybe they are waiting for the problem to fix itself but i doubt that will happen.

i nailed some pike in my first and so far only trip there this past fall.  all were caught on perch colored spinner baits...  i guess once they are spotted outside the weeds, they're an easy target.

I haven't fished up there for years from a boat but many, many years ago my brother in law and i went thru 50 large size minnies on walleyes with tipups before the sun came up. He went to get more minnies and once the sun got up we never had another hit from a walleye. I got to admit though none of the ones we caught were legal but it sure was fun.

That place in the old days was my favorite place to fish but it sure has changed as they all do. I think the first thing they need to do there is get the weeds to an opitimum percentage level and go from there. They could probably get the tower fixed for far less than the price of another new 4 wheel drive vehicle for the comission.

Anyone want to guess how much of the fish comission budget actually goes to improve the lake fishing situation? Other than a survey every couple of years what do they actually do to improve the fishing for a lake fisherman who prefers panfish at the non trout lakes?
