Got BASS?

Hello All,

New Bass fisherman here. Was wondering if an expert bass fishermen (or ladies) can tell me the size rod they perfer for bass fishing? I also was hoping to hear what LB test line I should use? Any suggestions are appreciated.

i like a 6'6" med fast rod, but everybody is different. i also like 6 pound mono in the clear waters of presque isle.  some people think that its too lite, but i have NO problems landing huge fish with it.

I used to use 6lb test because I thought light tackle gave me an advantage but now all my bass rods have at least 10lb test.  I get just as many bites and I land more bass because I can pull them out of heavy cover and I dont lose as many lures because I can pull snags out better. Most pros use at least 10lb test for open water and at least 18-20lb for heavy cover. Dont be afraid to go bigger.

I forgot to mention I like a 6'6" medium action. Spin or baitcaster each has their advantages at times.

Go 6'6 or 7'....I have a few 6'6's spinning and baitcasting....I think I'm going to get a 7' soon. Everyone likes the ugly sticks...I have one but I'm not that big of a fan. Dont get me wrong, they are pretty sensitive and dont break....but....they are heavy as hell. I like my all-star rod on my baitcaster. I also like medium action but would go medium heavy before I went medium light but then again it depends on what size bass your normally going to get into.

As far as line. I wouldnt go smaller than 10. I used 12 lb fluro last year.  Bigger isnt that big of a deal. Some pro's throw 50 lb braid...but with a leader.

I also like to use a 6.6 ugly stick. I use 6lb on a spinning rod. If I had more funds would luv to try diawa's bass rods but am using the ugly more for the price. have had more breakoffs with mono vs fluoro though. so i have been sticking with fluoro of late. knot strength seems better with fluoro but I could be wrong, just my experience. Have been wanting to use a baitcaster more but still am learning the the art of preventing backlash and birdnests. For this time of year try rapala topwaters and throw them out, let them sit then slow retrieve, pause and twitch a few times. usually the reaction chomp occurs right after u twitch and wait. zara spooks will be working well later on for me. once I figure out the baitcaster I want to use more jigs with big yummy trailers. cant wait.

The reason I started this post was because I wondered if anyone uses a Noodle Rod and 6lb line. I currently have a 10ft noodle with Mccoy's mean green in 6lb. Typically, I only used it for steelheading and had zero luck this year. This was my first time steelheading and I went twice and pretty much gave up after standing knee high in the water and getting skunked both time. I pretty much gave it all up.

Anyone else have an opinion on using my set up for bass fishing from shore? (10ft noodle with Mccoy's mean green in 6lb). All replies are appreciated.

put the noodle away for steelies and dont give up, practice your drifts, presentation is the key. a beautiful drift will always land a perty steelie. Im running the 6.6 ugly with 6 lb mccoy's mean green. 30 bucks for the ugly stick, cant go wrong for that.

a 10 foot noodle rod is way to sensitive but give it a try and find out for urself. float and fly technique with this rod in the winter for the winter bass but never really heard of anyone using a noodle for much else. am pretty new to this myself though. was out practicing with the baitcaster in the yard today, may have finally figured it out.

steelys.....my best advice with learning a baitcaster would be to put on a large spinnerbait or tie on a ton of weight. I thought it was easier to learn with the heavy weight. Its alot harder to toss a small crankbait than a heavy spinner.

I wouldnt use that noodle rod.....I would maybe think about using it for catfish, or carp or something...but not bass. Too long to be working jigs or top waters.

thanks for the advice. was out today practicing some and was doing ok until I decided to decrease the magnet to further my cast. I believe thats what the idea is, please let me know if I'm wrong in this thinking. I got the reel as a combo from****s and no directions came to explain the components of the reel. anyway when I decreased the magnet my next cast was a huge birdsnest. The nest occurred before my lure even hit the water. Had my spinning rod for back-up thank goodness.

    Steelys,

You want to adjust the magnets with the lure on. Tighten the magnets and then hold out your rod. Press the spool button. The lure should not go down with the magnets tight. Slowly loosen them untill your lure falls slowly to the ground. This will give you a good idea on what the magnets should be set on. When you get better, you will be able to loosen them up and not really worry about it. Just rem, even the pro's get a nest every now and then. Just dont give up on it.

With a baitcaster it's all about the thumb and lots of practice.

For the record, a professional anglers birdnest is called a "Professional Overrun"

I differ from alot of responses. In both casting and spinning rods I prefer a 6'6" or 7' medium heavy power and a fast action. I also use 10 lb or more line depending on the fishing I'm doing. My flippin stick has 65 lb braid, no leader. I may not get as many bites (that's another debatable topic in itself) but when I do I'm able to bury the hook and land the fish.
