When to change annodes?

Hello, i'm new to the boards. I have a 3 year old outboard. I fish only in fresh water and trailer my boat. How often do i need to change the annodes to prevent corrosion?

I think a lot of guys change them yearly, but they let their boats in water.

You can generally tell.  You will see alot of corrosion and pitting on the anodes when they need changed.....They are sacrificial so instead of the electrolysis attacking your boat, motor, trim tabs, ect it hits these zinc anodes 1st.

Not necessarily a yearly job...Really depends on how old they are and how beat up they are.  DO you have a picture of the anodes?

use a brass wire brush to get off most of the scale and you should be fine.  Not really necessary to buy new ones.

I have never changed the anodes on my 93 Glastron with an Alpha drive.
The boat has 200 hours on it and has always been trailered.
I bought the boat in 99 with 80 hours on it-the previous owner also trailered it.

General rule of thumb is to change them when they are corroded 50%.  Make sure you wire brush them to keep a fresh, unoxidized surface available.  Mine's in the water all season and it made it two seasons.  I haven't been up to the marina since it was pulled out of storage so I don't know if they will make it a third.
