Favorite trolling outfit

In updating my arsenal for trolloing the big pond, this spring, I have been taking a long look at rods.  What I have is a patchwork of whatever was on sale at the time, G Mountain, Cabelas and the ever popular PRichards combo special.  What I have done in the past is when I found a rod on sale that was over 7' with a decent action for dipsys I bought it.

What rods do you guys like and why?  I am not going to refit my whole package, but need to pick up a few more, so I am curious.

As far as reels I have bought the cheapos all along, so I have mix and match Diawa accudepts, Okumas and cabelas depthmasters.  I really like the depthmasters the best, but I like to palm the reel when bringing them in (an old musky fishing habit) and that can usually flip the bait clicker on, no big deal but annoying.....
Which reels do you prefer?

The best rod I have for dipsys is my favorite muskie rod....its an All Star Inshore Fisherman...they don't make 'em any more.  9' Extra Heavy action.  It is perfect and I can't find it anymore.

I do the same as "ShutupNFish". I use a musky rod 7 foot Penn Power 12-30 lb test for my dipsey rod and then when needed, I change reels for musky.

youre going to get a ton of opinions. i dont follow suit on the typical dipsy setup. all my dipsy rods are Ugly Stik BWD1101 9' Light action 6-20 lb test. imo they are not too stiff(telephone poles to drag the walleye in) and are not too light(will land steelhead/salmon with no problem) and you feel like you have a fight with a walleye. i have NO problem releasing the dipsys with fireline or mono, however i use very little mono rigs. all of my reels are Daiwa sealine 27's. in the past i would not have purchased Okuma linecounters, however i bought a bunch of used ones off of a fellow board member and "knock on wood" they have been flawless. they are Okuma Magda 30's.

Check out the new dipsey divers that will only release with a fish on not from wave action.
Here is a very nice reel that is not a cheap date. Abu Garcia Ambassadeur with a line counter 6500LC. Very smooth and fits your hand. The only drawl back is the small spool size. Much better than the Okumia's. Next choice is a Penn 209LC. Less expensive, hold more line and still fits your hand better than the Okiuma.

2 Rods that catch my attention are the 2 pc 10' Ugly Stick for Dipsey Diver 12-20lb medium to heavy action model bwdd-1100-10h, next choice is the Shimano 15-30lb med to heavy action 2 piece 10' model TDR-96MH2B. Hope this helps. You will get plenty of info on this site.  Good luck on your quest!

I was more curious than anything....Just to see what the varieties are.

CaptnKirk, sound advice....I love my ABu muskie reels  I use the 7000, but the 6500's are unbeatable as well.  I would just hate to have to buy 8 of them....lol.  I probably don't need any more for this season (which means I will probably get 2 more).

2 of mine are lightweight 7'6 musky rods, I like those..

Just like seeing all the opinions...

It depends on how you want to run your lines, if you are looking at 4 big dipsies (2 off each side), then you should use two different size rods on each side such as a 10'6 and a 8'6 to seperate them.  If you are running boards then you can probably get away with using a variety of rods.  The berkley fireline works well for the dipsies, easy to pop, and when you take inexperienced people out fishing you tend to loose less tackle.  The great lakes trolling book is pretty good, it basically has the amount of line and the depths of any diver using mono, superline, and wire.  It is quite a bit different then the scale that comes in the package.

Yea I have the books and run fireline or power pro on all my rods.  While on that subject, how many guys are still using snubbers?  I quit using them about 2 years ago, just because I saw a guy not using them, and have not had any problems.

I still use the skinny snubbers, however I have read a few books, and they didn't use snubbers on Kings.  Their explanation was that the rod absorbed alot of the impact especially if you use mono.  If you don't need it on kings, then I don't think there is a problem with walleye or steelhead.  I found the big fat ones tangle if you let the line out too fast.

Shimana Talora rods and Tekota 600LCs w/ 1000' of 7 strand wire.  Watch a fish hit that!  It will make your heart skip a beat, its pretty violent.  SMOOTH AS SILK reels, with an UNBELIEVABLE drag system

If you really want to have a heart attack, watch a 20#+ King smash that wire diver.  WOW!  IT gets violated, not hit.
