Elk creek photos 4-27

Caught over 75 smallies today, and at the end of the day one steelie on a jig and grub.  He caught my dad and me both by surprise.  Heres the pics.  The bass was bleeding a little but was released unharmed.

With the rain we're getting right now, I'm sure they're moving a little better today.

    Nice pics by the way.

RE: BLEEDING BASS - WHEN THEY'RE BLEEDING LIKE THAT, THEY'LL PROBABLY DIE! (I HAD A GOLDEN TROUT ATTACK MY SPINNER JUST AS I WAS PULLING IT OUT OF THE WATER FOR ANOTHER CAST. THE FISH SETTLED IN THE RUN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME TO RESUME FEEDING, AND AFTER OBSERVING IT FOR A FEW SECONDS, IT SUDDENLY ROLLED UP  ON ITS' SIDE, ALLOWING ME TO RETRIEVE IT. APPARENTLY, I HAD CUT ITS' GILL WHEN I LIFTED MY SPINNER OUT FOR ANOTHER CAST - IT TOO WAS SIMILIARLY BLEEDING!)

I HAVE OBSERVED THIS MANY TIMES - FISH IN LIVE WELL, FISH BASKET, OR RELEASED FROM UPSTREAM OR BOAT. A FRIEND OF MINE CAUGHT ABOUT A 10LB CATFISH FROM ANOTHER FRIEND'S POND, WHICH WE WERE RELEASING, BUT BILL SAID, "THIS ONE IS BLEEDING"! I COMMENTED TO THE OWNER THAT THE FISH WAS GOING TO DIE, BUT HE SAID IF IT DID HE'D TAKE A BOAT AND RETRIEVE IT. HE LATER COMMENTED THAT HE FOUND IT LATER - BLOATED & FLOATING - DIDN'T GET TO ENJOY THOSE FILETS!

TIP FOR ALL: IF YOU'RE GOING TO EAT AN OILY FISH LIKE A SALMON, STEELHEAD, BLUEFISH, ETC. YOU'LL GET A BETTER FILLET IF YOU CUT THE GILLS AND LET THEM "BLEED OUT", THEN KEEP THEM ON ICE TO FIRM UP AND PRESERVE!

jon_e_si, you have to release the smallmouth in elk either way right now, its not in season...

Released unharmed?   Good thing a WCO didn't see you holding the unharmed fish.

    Great pics and great day!

I've had many bass in my livewell during tournaments that initially had a small amount of blood like in the pic. They lived, many for 6+ hours in the livewell, then were released following weigh in. The fish are alot tougher than most think....

Blood from the gills is usually fatal for trout and while bass are a bit more resilient than trout, it still doesn't qualify as "unharmed."  Nonetheless, this is a risk with fishing and there is nothing you can do but give them a chance to live by releasing them, particularly when the regs don't permit harvest.  Nice fish and pics.

Avidangler, its a double edge sword, release it wrong, keep it defineately wrong, the only thing you should have done was rinse the blood off or turn the fish around, or not take the picture, that would keep the critisizim of the postings, nice catch no matter what you did.  John

thats a good fish, they are all good, some are gooder than others

No one should be critisizing him anyhow, blood doesn't always mean death. Should we not fish in waterways that have some species out of season.

And please FiveMilePete,,,don't let fear of WCO's interupt your fishing.

How long can you catch smallies consistently in elk, when do they move out? I know some are residents.
