Trout nets

I bought a new trout net at the begining of the season and it already has quite a few holes in it from the hooks getting tangled. Does anyone have any suggestions. And I like droppers so that isnt an option.

I'm very familiar with the terms "RUN AND GUN" and "FISH ON!"

Easy...Go with barbless hooks.  I used barbless on the Kenai River and caught trout/dollies and Red Salmon with no problem.  It's still easy to land fish in my opinion.

I never really thought of that before. Do you land as many fish with barbless. I have looked into barbless for easy removal but was unsure of the ability to hold fish.

Currently I have the bigger Orvis Clearwater net.  Flies will still get stuck in it, but it seems like it is not as bad as some of the cheaper nets.  I fish droppers all the time and I have yet to have to cut a fly out of it, or even struggle to get one out but, they still do get stuck at times.

The way to go is with one of those Broden nets.  They have some sort of rubber netting in them.  You will never need to worry about tangling flies in your net again. The only downside is that they are pricey, they are upwards of $100.

all my hooks are barbless, my buddy refuses to use barbless, says the fish can get off. we fish beside each other and i never see a difference in catch rate. even my lures are barbless. it's a little preventive maintainance for the day a hook becomes lodged in my clothing or worse me. had 2 guys at fish camp(yes alcohol was involved) get stuck bad, had to push it through on one guy ouch!!

saw a hook pop out of a chum over the summer, landed in my buddies cheek as he bent down to unbutton him. There wasn't alcohol involved prior to being stuck, but you can bet that there was when the fly came out ;)

    Lessoned learned.....fish barbless!

I only take one if I know a big one is lurking around, then I try to have somebody else land it. Its too hard by yourself. If its not over 16 or 17" just beach it.

    1. To avoid playing a large trout to death.
    2. To land fish in brushy or snaggy streams.

I have watched way too many people slide a 20" trout on the bank let it flop around on the rocks for a minute, give it the death grip(or put their foot on it), rip the hook out and boot it back in.  That situation is easily adverted with a decent net, the fish never has to come out of the water.  Slide the fish into the net, support it by the belly, grab hemos and remove hook, release fish.

TO EACH HIS OWN I GUESS. I HAVEN'T USED A NET ON ANY LAKE ERIE STREAM IN 25 PLUS YEARS. I JUST PLAY THE FISH INTO SHALLOW WATER TIL IT'S TOUCHING THE BOTTOM. WAIT A SEC. TIL IT LAYS STILL, REACH DOWN WITH FORCEPTS AND UNHOOK IT. IT NEVER COMES OUT OF THE WATER AND I NEVER TOUCH IT UNLESS I WANT A PIC OR ONE TO EAT. THE IDEA OF CARRYING AROUND A PAIN IN THE A-- NET GIVES ME SHIVERS. IF THERE ARE ANY DEEP BRUSHY CREEKS SOMEWHERE, I HAVEN'T SEEN THEM.

Glen--I use one of those mayfly magnets to hold my net on my back, it is tough to realize it is even there.  Also, you mean to tell me you have never fished a trout stream with some sort of log jam, or a stream that had very brushy tight banks that make it very easy to lose a good sized fish in?  It is a heck of alot less stressful using a net to keep the fish from heading into those sorts of places.  By the way, I really only use it on fish over 18" so I don't use it a ton but, the times I do I am sure glad it's hanging there.

    YOU ARE RIGHT

I WAS TALKING STEELHEAD CRICKS LIKE THE MILE STREAMS OR ELK. I USE A NET ON TROUT STREAMS LIKE BROKENSTRAW CAUSE I'M OUT IN THE WATER AND IT'S EASIER TO HANDLE THE FISH.
I'VE WATCHED A LOT OF PEOPLE [NOT REFERING TO YOU]CHASE A STEELHEAD AROUND IN 12" OF WATER WITH A NET WHEN ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS SLIDE IT'S HEAD OUT OF THE WATER AND UNHOOK IT. I'VE ALSO WATCHED GUYS WADE OUT INTO THE RUN TO NET A FISH AND SPOOK EVERYTHING.
PLACES LIKE THE LITTLE MANISTEE IN MI. YOU NEED A NET CAUSE IT'S ALL BRUSH AND LOGS AND WHEN YOU STEP OFF THE BANK IT'S USUALLY 3' DEEP. YOU HAVE TO LAND THE FISH STANDING RIGHT WHERE YOU HOOKED IT. YOU CAN'T GO DOWN WITH IT.
FOR A NEW GUY FISHING PLACES LIKE 20 MILE, I SAY LEAVE YOUR NET AT HOME.

Nets with a rubber basket like the ones that Tippy-Toe recommends harm the fish less and reduce the amount of headaches caused by the hooks getting snagged in the webbing.

I also agree with the release technique that glen uses.  The less time the fish is out of the water and handled the better.
