Paylakes???

What are they?  I have seen a few references to them lately, and I'm not familiar with them.  I've got a few guesses, but would like to hear from the "experts".  If they are similar to what I have in mind, are they an increasing trend?  Wave of the future?  Bad mojo?

What are the pros and cons?  Who has fished them?  ...and finally, are there any near Erie, or are they more of a "southern" thing?

Privately owned, privately stocked lakes that you can fish for a "usually' nominal fee. Some have daily, or weekly tournaments/derbies. Far from an elitist, DB type operation.

Not usually. Some charge a daily fee, others a fee per fish kept, or a combination. Last I fished one the daily fee was $8. Have heard of others that charge 2-3 bucks per fish.

No judgement here, but why would you pay to fish one?  It just seems so foreign to me.

Most are Tippy. They make easy access, low crowd, high success options for taking the kids. The one closest to here was not all that "fish in a barrel" though.

Remember, I've been spoiled living within a 20-minute drive to Lake Erie my whole life, not to mention the various other smaller lakes and reservoirs near here.  How common are these things?

I fish the pay lakes for a few reasions..
1.the money, with the kittys and tag money one can leave a few hundred $$$ richer.
Last week a man walked out with $908.00....
2.The competition NO guys it is not fish in a barrel the cost at sandy lake is $12 no limit on trout, the contest is...
$5 kitty bigest fish of the day.. 20 fisherman = $100

    $3 kitty second bigest    $ 60
    $2 kitty thrd bigest     $40
$2 go's in the 1/2 kitty tag evry time you pay that can build fast!!!
that is how the man hit for $883 plus a $25 tag..
So the cost for me to fish is $24 a day so i fished sat and sun.. sat no hit.. sun got 25in rainbow won $25 got 14.8 lb carp won $50 and come out $26 ahead..
I hope this helps you TT ask more if you need to know more!!

Going back 40 years there used to be quite a few of them around Pittsburgh and the outlying area. The reason for their existence was very simple. Much of the water was so polluted trout couldn't survive. If you wanted to fish for trout, paylakes were a viable option. With the clean water initiatives, and the dying of industry, mainly former polluted waterways can support trout. All of the pay lakes I used to go to have closed, victims of clean water and suburbanization.

It's like gambling and fishing all in one!  Who else can say they went to a lake, caught 25 fish and left 30 bucks richer?  It's a good time with some buddies or kids.  I've fished 84 lakes a few times and know they were stocking trout twice a week, Wed and Sat last time I checked.

I have fished a pay lake last year 3 times because it was an easy place for my girlfriend to go without her having to walk( total mindiscace and acl rebuild of her knee).First time got a 100 tag trout second time got big fish 100 again and last time got a 15 tag channel cat. total spent to fish it 3 times 16 per person per trip for a total of 96 bucks and payout of 215 so profited 119 bucks not a bad deal at all. First day spent ther got only around 10 trout between us but second time spanked them real well with 3 trout over 20in and at least 30 landed. last time was bad only landed 2 channel cats.

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.
WHY ARE ALL THE PLACES I HAVE YET 2 FISH SO FAR AWAY?

The "private lake" concept is a fast growing option today in regions of Texas and Ohlahoma and is a membership association with managed lakes and affordable user fees. The lakes are managed, stocked and can be scheduled for fishing by day or longer during the legal seasons. Rather than an exclusive enterprise, membership is open at a relatively nominable cost and many of the lakes are in the 100,000 acre size and more with smaller compounds included. In other words, you have an opportunity to use fishing skills to catch quality fish - almost all are largemouth waters with fewer holding smallmouth and crappie. I haven't googled the program, but I'm sure it's there to research. Also read about it in North American Fisherman? or Bassmaster Mag.? a couple months ago.

Wow!  I had no idea how popular these things are.  Gambling and fishing rolled together.  Sheez!  Who'da thunk it?

Come on, they can't call it "fishing" there, can they?  Fishing has always been a crap-shoot (pardon the gambling metaphor), and this would place a higher level of expectation on an outing.

Are they regulated?  What agency, Fish Commish, or Commerce?  Do you need a license to opperate?  To fish?  The owners pay taxes I hope.

I'm still not convinced it's a good thing.

It's really no different than fishing any other lake that the PA fish commission stocks. Except the lakes are usually smaller and the fish are usually bigger.

It's been well over 25 years since I've fished a pay lake but used to do it just for the fun of catching large carp(up to 25 pound). Couple of guys, a fire, cook'in some burgers and dogs and enjoying some beverage. Easy access, often a bench to sit on and a shelter to get out of the rain or sun, discussing who makes the best bait and what kinds of flavors are you using.

My parents would take me to them sometimes when I was younger becuase we always caught fish.  I thinks it's great for kids but as an older person I wouldn't go to one.  They are just private lakes that are stocked and people pay to fish in them.

There is also a Paylake Forum now.  It is based out of North Carolina (the paylakes there are the big leagues and they have over 100+ carp paylakes).  There are some PA guys on the forum tho.  Other states that also have the carp/catfish paylakes include: IN, OH, SC, and GA.

Check out the forum here:  http://www.southernpaylaker.com/

Check out this link here for a PA paylake event coming up here next weekend----Seghi's Paylake is supposed to be stocking a ton of new carp this weekend:
