NEW FISHING PROGRAM for young adults
I am thinking about starting a young adult fishing program for inner city kids. I was approached buy a gentlemen I work with he is a director of a group home also works with Vets . after he seen a few pics of some Erie trips I made , he asked if I would consider mentoring a kid from a group home to take fishing . After we talked for a while he asked me about fishing the pros and cons fishing rivers vs fishing Erie. I told him in my opinion there is nothing that comes close to fishing steelhead in fall, winter months. But like I told him some trips you do great some are just ok but just being on the stream is what it’s all about . This was a few weeks ago
So now it looks like with some help from him and a few grants his program might be possible. I THINK it’s a great idea giving young adults the experience and self accomplishments and rewards that fishing has. So from what I understand this will be a pilot program with in a single group home for kids ranging in age of 8-17 however I did express that I thought kids under 12 with cretin conditions and over all safety might not be best for 12 and under . Knowing the tribs 12 years. That things can happen like filling your waders with water, slipping falling.
So I was wondering what some of you thought about this? I think it can be a great thing. it will be only 6 kids at a time per trip with three adults (experienced fisherman ) because the tribs is not a good idea for guys or gals that never picked up a rod try and direct the kids on the stream there will be 2 counselor along . it will be 2 kids per adult only 8 hours actual fishing don’t include travel . Adults will have radios everyone will have to stay within a 1 mile radius as a group. Still there are a few things to be worked out.
So we will need 2 other experienced trib fishermen that will be interested there are a few requirements. Must be at least 21 years old have the ability to be patient working with kids that never fished before. have a clean back ground ( pass act 22-23 check paid for by the state ) there is no pay involved but a new fly rod and real that will be purchased for you, you can keep maybe waders’ as well not sure on the waders’ but you can maybe help changed a young adults life. So if anyone has any ideas or is interested please let me know this is only in the planning stages there is a lot of red tape it does look as if it will happen .. Oh and the three trips up I was thinking one in October and 2 in late November
