Fly Rods

I am new to fly fishing....  I am going to purchase a rod and wanted some opinions...  I will be fishing for steelhead and salmon, and was thinking of getting an 8 weight.   Is this a good weight for steelies and salmon???

An 8 weight would be a good choice.  I dont really salmon fish, but I know a lot of guys who do on bigger creeks and rivers that prefer an 8,9 or 10 depending on fish.  For the Erie tribs, a 6,7 or 8 would be a good choice.  I prefer a bit longer rod in a 6 or 7wt.  Try a few out, length, weight, brand...its all really preference.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

get a spey, forget a regular fly rod for that type of fishing. My next rod will DEFINATELY be a spey. Good for big rivers too.

If you're new to fly fishing I suggest going to a local fly shop if you have one, or take a road trip to find one.  You will be better off in the long run learning from those guys on what to use and how to fish.

    jlh,
He's new to flyfishing and you want him to start out with the spey rod?????
He'd be better off with a stadard 8 wt and learn to handle that.

Im sorry, my bad... yes, a 9ft 8wt would serve you about right for steelies.

Id jump down to a 7ft for small trout waters to learn with.

Supinski can talk your ear off.
He cut his teeth up here fishing the Catt.
Check out his Wiggle Hex pattern.

Get you a 9'-10' 8wt,all you need. I have a 9wt that i rarely use, mainly for a spare.Landed many 30+lb. salmon & a pile of steel on a 8. Look for a good warrenty on your rod.Not trying to push any rods, but Cabelas has  free replacement on many of there rods. Most of the big name manuf. charge a $35 or more fee to fix or replace a rod,and you are without it for weeks.
