Amounts of Rain

It hasn't appeared to have rained as much near the streams as they were calling for on Monday.  Any update on conditions?  I haven't seen much on the report board, probably because everyone is fishing.  I can thank the weatherman for my lack of attendance.

I crossed Elk yesterday evening around 6:00 p.m. and it was very high.  There were no cars in the parking areas at Rick road, or Sterretania road.  It has been raining pretty much all night and this morning.

The local streams in southern Erie county are rising.  Some of the smaller streams are at or above flood stage right now.  I have not been to Erie today, but would expect the tribs to be blown out.  I would seriously doubt the fishing would be very good today, so I don't think you missed anything by staying home.

Besides the rain, the temperature last night stayed in the 40's and the snow melt continued overnight.  The combination of melting snow and rain is the problem right now.

I found it, but I guess I still need to know what would be considered normal or average.

Right now all the streams are near or at flood stage with a light rain falling. There is enough snow South of Erie in wooded areas to affect the creeks for a couple more days and a lot of water lying in the lower areas. I doubt anything will be fishable before the weekend at the earliest and that's assuming no more rain.

Brandy run gage can be tricky.  It's usually accurate to the point of letting you know the extremes: if it's blown out or if it's really low.  In the middle can be tricky depend on how the rain falls.  After a good long rain, brandy usually tells the tales relatively accurate.   Between 8-20 is good for the West side.  14 being great.  But then again, my "prime" may be different than yours.  When I say prime, I'm refering to flow AND color.  All you can do is check it before you go and monitor it.  I remember after Hurricane Ivan, the water was "high but clear."  If I was a traveler at the time, I would have thought the water was cookin' and brown.  The fact was that the water was gin clear, yet plowing.  Fish hugged the edges that week just like they would in high dirty water.  It certainly gave the streams a different look.  While this was an extreme case and we may never have two hurricanes in a such a short time again, it's an example of stream gages being deceiving.  Best you can do, is learn all the streams, and you'll always have a place to fish, no matter the conditions.  Maybe not the most exciting but..

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

I use the gages for the local streams here in WV, but I know those streams.  It is tough for me to understand how the gages are in comparison to the actual water for erie since I am only up there a couple of times each year.  I like your bit of info SK.  Thanks.

    Forget the rain, it's snowing.

And as far as reading Brandy Run, you really need to see Elk enough times at various levels to make a decent judgement.  It's tricky.
