It seems to me that many of the shallow bays at Pymy, including Blackjack, have silted in a lot over the past 2-3 years. I know the water level at Pymy the past few springs has been less than ideal but even when the water level is normal I have noticed that much of the structure I am used to fishing in these bays is completely silted in and holding no fish.

Black jack bay is very small and is actually a little southwest of the ramp.  The big bay immediately west of the ramp that you have to go around the peninsula to get to is what we refer to as Wilson's Bay (Don't know if that is the correct name or not).

ALL of the north end bays will hold fish soon after ice out.  The silt that has come in, in my opinion is good for these bays in the early spring because the murky water caused by siltation as well as the mud/muck bottoms and the fact that they are so shallow will warm quickly with a few warmer days and some sunshine.  These bays are all MAGNETS for pre-spawn crappies, especially if you can find last year's weeds/lilly pad growth and/or wood.

Crappie shouldn't mind the silt as much as the eyes crappie will still move into the dead lilly pads often. The eyes still prefer the gravel bottom, but chug's right over the last few years bays have really seem to have silted over. Even some of the old nice, sharp dropoffs I liked to fish are still there but not as drastic.

    BTW...

The murkier water and increased turbidity caused by the siltation means that 95% of your north end bay crappies will be blacks, which I prefer anyway, a lot thicker across the back!

Once the ice comes off and a few days of sun/warming you can't go wrong fishing Wilson's Bay, Black Jack Bay, Bennett's Bay, Crappie Bay (imagine that), Duck Blind Bay, Red Cross bay, etc.  Not to mention that Bridge 20, the rocks, and the Spillway will all hold crappies.

storm, where are duck blind bay and crappie bay?  have no plans on fishing them, but i am intrigued by the names of different landmarks on the lake.  wish i could get a history of pymatuning with the names of bays, landmarks and people.  i always thought that bennett bay and red cross bay were the same...no?  appreciate the education.

My buddy and I make up our own names for bays, points, areas, etc. at Pymy and all the other local lakes. That way when we are talking, others have no idea where we are talking about. Plus it is fun to get creative with the names. The biggest problem I have had with the silt increase is you can't get as far back into some of those Northern bays at Pymy as you used to and wood cover that used to hold fish is now completely silted in, but I agree it does assist with how fast those bays warm up in early spring.

chug, we have done the same thing down on the south end, long bar, short bar, little bar and so on.  i know some of the more well known spots, just curious how they got their names, like the islands on the north end.  i know about stocker and a couple of the others down south.

If you head towards the causeway from Wilson (in a boat) Clark Island is to your left.  The "bay" that you are looking at as you are running parallel to the island is Crappie Bay.  Once you get to the south end of Crappie Bay, there is a visible sand bar.  Directly across that narrow from the sand bar is an island and the bay behind the island is duck blind bay.

Rap, I spend most of my time at Pymy fishing for LM above the causeway but if you look at tournament creels over the past 5 years at Pymy you will be see a definite trend of bags of SM being in the money, particularly in the early spring buddy tournaments. Last year SM dominated at several weigh-ins. I occassionally "run into" some SM by accident and when I do they are usually good ones but I need to develop some strong SM locations when I want to specifically target them. It is reaching a point where if you are not on a strong SM bite don't even bother entering those early spring tourneys. If I decide to fish some of those tourneys this year I need to spend several days up there only trying to locate SM so I may take you up on your offer. Chug
