bugs on the snow

any idea what the bugs i saw in the snow yesterday were. they looked like fleas jumping around on the snow were the first ones, the other ones looked like stoneflys, about 1/4 to 7/8 " long . this was in the 1:00 pm range and the sun was high,so it did push the temps above freezing a little.
never saw anything fly only walk or jump.

the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

    Nut,
What you saw were snow fleas/springtails and probably little black stone flies.

It could have been midges and/or little black stoneflys. Both appear this time of year. The stoneflys crawl out of the creek onto the snow, and midges once spent after mating, fall on the snow.

wasn't midges, i have them here at the sewer plant, they were mating monday. it was a black stonefly and snow fleas. i also saw a 1/2" blue grey caddis looking bug w/ fold down wings that were doubled:ie 4 separate wings. any info on that.
