Centerpin beginner

Hey everybody,
I just bought a centerpin setup and have no idea what I need to start fishing lol. I’ve fly fished for steelhead my whole life, but that’s a different story. Can anyone tell me what size floats and weights I should need? Also, what does everyone use as backing for their pins? You can throw out some other stuff that you think I should get as well. I will mostly be fishing Elk Creek in Erie, Pa.

Thanks

I only fish Erie during the week, so the amount of people won’t be a problem.

"having no idea" - isn't that a common trait among anyone fishing a centerpin?

Crowds have gotten worse during the week. Still not near as insane as weekend, but there is noticeable pressure, during the week, especially after a good rain event.

But good luck to ya

Backing, same stuff you back your fly line with.
Floats, smaller ones (i fish the Salmon river alot) 2g ...the size of float is relative to the water you are fishing, shot string is more important
Shot small ones, usually two at the top of the string then space them every 4-6 in to achive the depth you need your float to run at
Beads vs baits, I do both, bead with a single egg or egg sack

wishin i was fishin

Float 2.5-7g on ur mainline (pending flow, river size, etc), then microswivel, leader on other end of swivel to hook. Mix your shot pattern pattern heavy to light going down the leader to hook. Picture spin fishing with a bobber and adding some lead between bobber and hook, same concept. Some useful videos on YouTube. Don’t forget to peg the reel before you set the hook, everyone makes that mistake in beginning. Trial and error.

why did  you buy a CP ?

not that I GAS what rod someone slings

Seen a pinner hogging the drift on Elk...guys across got tired of waiting on him...pretty soon they tangled up and the one spinner guy gave a full force yank....ever see a hundred feet of pinner reel explode line off in 2 seconds !......beware of long drifts in crowds....lol

It is a public stream and if he is polite he should be welcome on the water.  I have fished among fly guys that were as rude as any.

Ive seen pinners do just fine with normal drifts...not all do the football field size ones.  Heck if I'm noodle roddin it and there's no one below me ill open the bale and let it go.  If duuds are close by then obviously ya gotta be awares no matter the method.  Yinz are drinkin that haterade.

Please retrieve your lost line.
Streams in neighboring states are much larger(wider) than the PA Streams and would be very fish-able with that technique. Thinking of Grand, Conny and Cat.

Proud to have been a FOT/
I've been out fishing.

Thanks for the help blow jobs

That should let you get lots of help.   And as far as only fishing during the week.   One time on a small east side creek, there were only two of us on the whole **** creek.  Me, fly fishing, with short casts, and short drifts. And a stupid centerpinner, who was about 30 yards upstream, who  kept drifting past me at least another thirty.  Even as I moved downstream.    So I had to continually wait for him to start a new drift.  Until I finally had enough, and accidentally tangled up with him, and then accidentally snipped his float, and whatever else he had on while untangling the mess.

Why most here don't appreciate pinners.  I hear guys at Walnut creek, love them there, though.  They will teach you too.  Just go down to the access area, and hop in by the stop sign.

Pins are great! Only ever used mine in PA a few times though, cause to crowded, just as sometimes to crowded for the fly. Usually take all options and go with/decide depending upon crowds and weather. A "few" said how to normally setup the rig, but, our streams to small IMO. I like it here cause the long rod and ability to keep action on bait/lure. In NY, man much fun, especially when 100' between you and others and you hook them right in front of guys, they look around like why the heavens that fish be jumping.... To funny IMO.... If CR500 was still on here or even Jiggy, they give you lots of info, CR built my rod, love it, even use it on Aurthur for crappies and pans, can reach out and jig baby.

Reading all these posts i will agree that for the most part pa steelhead streams are jus too small   over the years n years of steelheading on elk  i find my 10ft noodle with my spinning reel does the job very well..  yes ny rivers like the salmon river and oswego are tailor made for pinners  thats where you see them as common place

I have become comfortably numb

I fish the salmon river in NY every year and don't see many pinners at all.  I also fish the Cleveland tribs for spring steelhead and unfortunately, the pinners have taken over the place.  You can handle a few, but the Rocky River has a few too many.
