Boating for Steelhead

I have been coming up to Erie for the last 15 years or so and fishing the tribs.  Never thought about fishing the lake but now that I have a capable boat was wondering if it might be worthwhile to give it a try sometime.  Any pointers?

what's the casting distance of the heaviest spOOns  while standing waist high in the lake??

and will a 10mph south wind increase the distance by 18%

Troll the front of all tribs and don't rule out the bay.Troll Cleo's and run some plugs JR Thunder sticks. My favorite plug in the day was a Blakemore black or pink coachdog. I ran it right in the prop wash. Believe it or not it still works. It sorta is a bass plug but I've caught many fish on them,I don't know if they still make it but I've got quite a few. Pretty crazy watching a steelhead jump out of the water 10-12' behind the boat before you even get the rod in your hand.lol

Kind of a far run from the Elk Creek boat launch. Good thing about Elk Creek launch, you can troll in the stream a bit before hitting the lake. Get a few hits and can even anchor in the stream.

Pork, I love you man ..but I'd be skeert of getting bomb'd from both sides of the bank if I loitered more than a minute....

if the OP has his Ohio license...
...and boat 'n trailer that could be launched at places like Elk,  there are a couple creeks a relatively short drive  west where the mouths for a good ways upstream  are more like rivers and more conducive to trolling in and out of and around
without shore anglers able to launch spOOns and  J-plugs at you

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions.  Think I'm going to make the run up and see how it goes.

A lot of guys do well trolling in front of Trout Run, I’d imagine you can get them casting too. I can crush Steelies offshore and in the creeks but I’ve tried nearshore and bay trolling for them probably a dozen times and have never caught one in shallow water.

If I ever get enough time to make a run up for nearshore trolling, I will run Hot n Tots, Jointed Raps, Husky Jerks, etc.

I catch them trolling from Walnut to Elk in my kayak. An average day is 3 to 4 and a good day is 8 to 10. Trolling depth varies but I usually start at 10ft and work my way down to 6ft and if that isn't working I'll back off to 15ft. Little Cleos are frequently the ticket but not always. I have had a lot of luck with brightly colored crankbaits. The hot spots vary and trout run is frequently good. Develop an eye for how far the spoon guys can cast. It's not as far as they think ;-) That said, it also gets crowded at that location and if they are there they are other places too. There are holding spots along the shoreline that are consistent producers that are not associated with streams. You'll have to find them. I'm not giving them up ;-) but they are there.
