Making Jigs: How to

I've had many requests from guys interested in making their own jigs.  Therefore, since I was off today, I thought I'd offer this here.  Hope it helps and if anyone has specific Qs, feel free to PM me.  Please excuse my tying terminology.  I don't know the technical terms of some processes (like the final tie off) and maybe someone can help out in this regard.  This is just my way of tying my jigs and has worked well for me; anyone with more to add is certainly welcome to offer additional suggestions.  Enjoy.

Nice work, I do my bucktails much the same, but I don't know the terminology either.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

marobou works well in place of bucktail but to each their own they all work very well.

A couple of years ago I watched a guy simply crush the steelhead through the ice off of trout run. We are talking 40-50 fish. I would not have believed it if I didn't see it first hand. He caught them all on homemade jigs(much larger than any jig I have ever used). I have never been able to find the exact color of jig he was using in ANY stores. I think he said he used dog hair off of his beagle's tail!!

I don't care for marabou for a few reasons...One, I don't think its quite as durable as bucktail.  Two, I don't like the way it stores after being used(sticky), Three, the bucktail is virtually free for me other than dye, Four, I've never felt the need to use anything else since these produce quite well.  I do admit though, the marabou has a nice pulsating action in the water.  I do think, however, the flash makes all the difference.  This whole process sure gives me something to do while thinking about fishing when the conditions do not permit...its quite therapeutic for me as well.

    Finally...jigs do dunk floats!

if i fish a jig under a float its a very small one...in clear conditions ill take a 1/16 oz and twitch it in front of their faces and once i see one open their mouth at it ill work that one...sometimes i add a minnow head for appeal..or a few waxies..

haha i have seen all this in action esp the mouthing and ill be danged if I can get one to do it.  Ive seriously seen fish in December when it was cold literally move out of a holding lie 20 feet or better and chase down a egreigiously sized jig like one would in September.  You guys have a certain touch im so jealous!  I wont fish bait anymore unless its coffee, but i wanna get back on the spin with the jig.

Jig are one of my go too favorites, I make all my own so loosing a few here and their is no biggie. I tie all my jigs with flash nothing else, I found a material out of Canada that tears them up. If i had one fly to use be a jig no doubt in several different colors of flash.

Nice job.I just started tying some jigs last summer using calftails.I had a bunch I tied using the crystal flash.I showed a buddy my jigs and he mentioned using them for steelies.Mine are in 1/80th and 1/64th ounce sizes, the pannies love them.I usually tip with maggots.

I'm gonna fish more and work less.

I thought about tying up some jigs with all flash, but wasn't sure how they would hold up.  I was at a muskie show at Butler High School last weekend and a guy had a bin filled with all kinds of flash material.  I got 6 different packs for $5.  Tinsel, irrodescent and pearl...that should last me awhile.  That stuff is like $2.99 a pack in the bait shops.  I got a Great deal!  Yes, I agree, tying jigs can be pretty addicting...almost as much as using them!

Loaftech i have been experimenting with jigs, for years. I'll sit on goggle for hours at work, and home at times and just scan flash material. When i go to bait shops i look at all the flash material they have. I usually buy only on pack at a time of different colors, tie up maybe 10 jigs up then try them. If they work I'll write  down the UPC number color, And I'll Keep that for my record. I have a tablet that i keep my info in. I have had some jigs work great one year and then go cold on me altogether. I had one jig that worked miracles then didn't produce very well at all for me for like 2 years. This year i tried it again and it was hot, very hot indeed! Shutupnfish, when i tie my jigs i never have a problem with them with standing the jaws of chrome, they hold up very well. I do tie them with Kevlar and then whip finish them. The Kevlar you really can pull down on them without any worry about breaking or coming apart.
