Wading jacket

I am looking for a wading jacket that will hold up to the cold.  All the jackets that I have looked at seem to be thin.  Any one have any suggestons on a wading jacket for the winter.

I wouldnt even waste your time with a yuppie wading jacket, get a North Face it will stand up to the most brutal conditions and cost you just as much as a wading jacket that wont keep you warm will.  I dont see why north face doesnt make waders and stuff for fishing, they are the pinnacle of cold weather performance.

I always find it better to layer myself.  The temperature usually changes by a good 15-20 degrees every day, so is nice to be able to shed or add clothing when needed.  If you like one but think it is too light, I'd just throw a wicking shirt like Underarmor and a few flannels, long sleeve or fleece shirts under.  Mine is some off brand from****s (Quest), waterproof and breathable.  I really like it for wading or fishing in general, from 60 degrees and raining, to 20 degrees and snowing.  It doesn't cut the wind completely though.  But fishing in 30-40 mph wind is usually not the best.

I'm sure something like North Face or Columbia would work just fine, with less layers to worry about.  Not sure if they make anything that is more fishing/wading friendly though.

    sorry...  north face is junk
it used to be a top producer of outdoor gear... but those times are past...
once they signed deals with big box stores they had to produce ungodly amount of product...
causing i BIG loss in quality...

you want something that is designed for fishing...
i tried using marmont, patagonia, and arc'teryx (non fishing jackets)
and they just aren't made for fishing... no pockets, poor fitting hood/shoulders/arms for casting... too long in the waist

i bought a cloudviel 8x jacket for 175 on ebay... OUTSTANDING

    cloudveil makes good stuff....

i am also a fly fisherman...so casting is more inportant...
also i use this jacket inplace of a vest..
below are a few pics of it in use...
notice i can hang nippers, spools, hemostats, and a stone
plus large pockets for boxes, short waist for wading, waterproof cuffs, good hood, waterproof zippers, pit zips for dumping heat, long sleeves for casting
ALL features you will find in any good wading jacket... cabelas, orvis, hodgemen, patagonia, simms, cloudveil...
    some have better features
do a seach and you will find a ton of options...  i have tried on/fished quite a few... let me know if you want more opinions

find a one that fits you body and budget...

All depends on what ya like. I liked the comment about the yuppie jackets lets see yeah their are alot of expensive jackets out their, but you only pay for what you get. I have a Simms G3 jacket and wouldn't trade it for the world. I remember many times where it was raining, wind blowing, sleeting, you name it. Yes the down fall is that you have no kinda zip in liner but i just bought a polar tech, jacket to wear under it, and i wear my under Armour and have no problems what's so ever. Plus i can honestly say when the wind is whipping 20 mile a hour plus, it's 100% completely wind proof, and water proof it's very nice. Has served me very well the last two years i have had it now. I buy another tomorrow if their was something to go wrong with the one i got and the only thing i can see that begging someone stealing it.

Narrth Face man, im tellin you.  I'd take my jacket out in a Gale Warning, and it's not as much as the Simms G3, in fact its more, hence you get what you pay for....;).  Im a huge advocate despite the "sell out" notion.  North Face and William Joseph, 2 best products on the market today.

Sick Dude, check that thing out you cant tell me that is not a quality product.  It's not my jacket (yet) but i tried it on and its probably the sickest most techincal jacket ever.

That is a nice jacket.  Not sure if it is very functional for wading a stream though?  You'd either need to tuck it into your waders or only wade into thigh high water, or submerge it.  Not sure if the pockets are set up for fishing all that well either.  Now, for skiing, hiking, or fishing from the shore/boat it looks really nice.  I don't wear my wading jacket other than for fishing.  I'm not a fan of jackets that have elastic around the waste, to wear around town, but very functional for wading.  I wouldn't even think to wear a jacket like that one for wading.

that isn't a fishing jacker...looks like a kayak jacket to me...
no hood, poorly designed and placed pockets, not enough pockets, too long in the waist, those wrist closures look like they would grab line, no water proof-wrists, no place to hang spools ect...

I still question the quality of NF today...especially their popular lines...
you can get their specialty products for a hefty $ tag... ie full down suits..
the taping of the seams and the membrane are not of the highest quality... the same can be said with marmot...

Its all a matter of opinion, fit, and use

    personal opinion...
that jacket is not worth 370 for fishing...and fits your bill for "yuppie jacket"...
it may have some neat gimmicks...like folding into a backpack
but 2L hyvent won't cut it for harsh fishing...

Nice opinion.  I regularly fish in pretty harsh conditions and NF stood up to all of it for me that all.  Being a dual purpose jacket I do hike, ski, riversport and such, so it would work for me.  U'd be suprised, its not as long as it looks.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Guide Series stuff (jacket, waders, vest pack) myself...

I just layer with fleece underneath and remain pretty comfortable in windy, snowy, rainy, cold conditions.

I use the Patagonia SST jacket.  I bought it large enough for layering with a fleece vest and whatever else.  I like it alot!  It has held up well after at least five seasons of steelheading.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same
