YOUGH RIVER

Is the Yough River deep enough for a boat? Looking to smallmouth fish but I've had 2 ppl tell me I can take the boat in the river and its deep enough and I've also had 2 ppl tell me its not deep enough. I'm looking to fish the Smithton area. Thanks guys

It really depends on your boat and the water level. The Yough does have some long pools deep enough for nearly any boat, but moving from one pool to another can be an issue if not impossible in a bigger boat.

I fished that area in a kayak, and I don't think I'd try anything else other than a flat bottomed jet boat.  Even with a jet boat you wouldn't make a whole lot of friends with the wake you'd have to make to get around in some places.  My opinion.

I have a 14', heavy, semi v with a 15 horse and can fish from Mckeesport to the rapids just above Coulter (Turner valley).  I can make it up through those rapids when the water level is up some but I am unfamiliar with that stretch and didn't get into the deep area well enough.  Was bumping bottom too much for my liking and floated back down.

See boats with props fishing West Newton area regularly but i have never fished that area.

You didn't say how big your boat was. But I'd say either launch at little Boston or McKeesport.

You can fish about 1/4 mile stretch at Cedar Creek.  I think it gets pounded with fishermen, although most are stuck to the park side on shore.  There is a boat launch there to easily launch and go.  I took my 12' tin can there before, and able to motor up and drift down.  I don't think my 17' would launch very well there, but something 14' or under would be just fine.

like you asked smithton  area. look @ the  river gauge in sutersville  goes below 4.1 you have to know really know the river to go from cedar creek to Smithton . if you don't have a jet kayak from smithton down make a day or heck 2 day trip out of it . stick to the other side away from the park till you see 70 bridge little island jump to park side or your done water is 4 inches deep . even with jet you can not make it unless you almost hit shore on right side hard .
