River Closing

Anybody know when the shenango river closes this year. I know its normally around the 30 or so of march, couldnt find it on the fish commisions website. Any help would be greatly apprecieted.

I'm very familiar with the terms "RUN AND GUN" and "FISH ON!"

Yes, it's april first. Now they need to slow the river down some. But it'll be hard to do. The lake has risen over 5ft since last week. Waters over the road to golden run. River looks like chocolate milk. What would be the better baits to use.

If your going for trout then pink or chartruse power bait works great for trout. Then some good size minnnows or nightcrawlers. If no luck then try a small rooster tail. I think that the small 1/16 ounce in a dark body with a gold blade ( my go to color is brown trout because of the plain body) works pretty good. If your after panfish then try chartruse tubes or 1 1/2" to 2" grubs. If your after bigger stuff( like me)then try a large lively baitfish live lined with a big hook through the nose.

Here what pages 11 and 18 have.

    Page 11
    Approved Trout Waters
These waters are closed to all fishing (including taking of minnows) from March 1 to 8 a.m. on the opening day of the trout season.
    Page 18
    Northwest Region Regulated Trout Waters
Shenango River (outlet of Shenango Dam downstream to Buckeye Drive Bridge (SR 3025))

    Page 28
    Miscellaneous Waters with Special Regulations
States that there is a closed season on trout between March 1 to opening day. All other species inland regulation apply.

I stand corrected. Page 28 does state April 1 to opening day.

Check page 12, last article. Approved trout waters. Yough and shenango are open all month of march. If you choose not to take advantage of your license and stamp, thats your choice.
The river will be closed to fishing from april 1 to opening day. From the tailrace to the feed mill.

Chauncy, I wouldn't count on fishing that shenango river any time soon. 7 gates 1 foot each, the lake is 16ft. above winter pool and prob still rising. I fished of the wall below the dam tonight just to fish for about an hour with some power bait or gulp leeches...No luck.

A foot each is wadeable, depending on where you're fishing. If they open em' up any more than that it gets a bit hairy, though.

I fished yesterday around 9:30 AM. Water was rising fast. Had a couple hits on minnows but no catches. Will try again later today.
Ronnie, they must have slowed the water down after 4 or 5, because when i went back at 1, the whole island was under water.

All seven at two and a half feet each now, no wading that. With that lake as high as it is it was only a matter of time before they blow it out completely.

I've waded it with all seven open to one and a half each but wouldn't advise it, especially if you don't know the river well.

In my opion its pointless to wade with 7 gates. To hard for what you get. Ever do any good wading down there with 7 gates?

I,ve done fair working the shore by the outlets. Caught walleyes and trout that way. Don,t like fast water, hate swimming.

What do you mean by "shore by the outlets". I'm assuming you mean right next to the wall on the rocks. Correct?

If you've fished the river enough you get used to the flow. I'll wade it in spots spanning from the wall down to Danny's bridge if all gates are open to a foot each. I'm probably the biggest puss when it comes to water because I can't swim, but I know the river and it's layout enough to feel comfortable with wading it under those circumstances. If the gates open up to 1.25 or 1.5 feet each, wading becomes more difficult in spots but not impossible...for instance I've seen guys lined up in front of the wall at 1.5 feet each. I've seen a little bit of everything in my time fishing the river, some rediculous and some just downright comical. I can't tell you how many I've seen go down because they're in a rush to get in the water or get to a spot. There are a lot of unexpected big rocks so it's easy to get caught off guard if you're not careful. I wouldn't bulldoze wade my way around any body of water let alone the Shenango River.

Anyway, some of the best walleye fishing is when the gates are open to 1.5 to 2.0 feet each. I've fished from the near shore or waded just a few feet out from shore casting for them and had banner days.

I'm pretty sure they opened them all up to three feet each this morning which is impossible to fish so don't even bother, even from shore. It'll be blown out for a while until the lake gets down, still seven feet above summer pool.

Anyway, when the levels permit it's great fishing, especially if you're into multi-species. There are some rediculously large fish that congregate along the wall from big walleyes, browns, rainbows, pike, muskie, hybrids, blue gill, crappie, you name it. There's excellent bass fishing, too. I remember fishing trout last summer just above the downed tree where there was only one gate open and the water clarity was pretty clear in the shallower runs...anyway, saw an easy 40" class muskie just slowly cruising up towards the wall without a care in the world.

Your right Ron, alot of variety to catch. I,ll stay close to shore and work rocks, trees and holes along the bank from the dam to the iron bridge.
Brock,(captain hook) has a nice web. showing the variety of fish to catch there. Eating those fish, well I,ll just say , not me.
Wading can be tricky when high. A fellow drowned there a few years ago when he stepped in a deep hole over his waders.

Why? same water in the lake, do you eat fish from the lake?  Just wondering I might start fishing it.  When I was a kid the neighbors used to take me up there.  We would park at bridge and walk up to a big bend and fish for northerns.   People ate them then

I was using a streamer in the first hole last year and hooked a pike. Ran across the hole when its teeth touched my 4x tippet and away it went.

That northern fishing at the bend is still popular today, I notice a lot of people fishing it for them.

By the way, I've heard the story of someone drowning but never any specifics. Any idea what part of the river it was? Not really any deep holes until you get past the fast run beside the island, unless the person was wading it when the water was like it is now...

It was at the bend between the dam and the bridge. It was high at the time.
Eat some crappie. Not alot. All other fish, no.
Have seen some nasty gunk gurgle up from the river floor below Greenville. Also a radio active site right next to the water treatment plant. Old, but still some there. They just spent 2 years cleaning that. It was located below where I worked for 27 years.

That bend is pretty deep even with a couple gates opened, pretty slow moving.

Some of the walleye move upstream from below the mills that use to dump in the river. Was some pretty bad stuff for quite a while going in there. They cleaned some of it up but the landfill MAY still be seeping into it downriver. If you're planning on eating the eyes, use the meal a month chart. Or you may not need a lantern when you fish in the dark.

Chauncy, how do you feel about eating fish out of the reservoir?  This thing freaks me out, we just ate our last bag of crappie from there.  The river does flow into it after all,,,mills, landfills, radio active crap wow.  Where should I put my pontoon this summer, Wilhelm, hey then I won't need that bigger motor.  Now i'll be watching to see if I start glowing in the dark.

I think I know what water treatment plant he is talking about and that is the part of the river that COMES OUT OF the lake. That river isnt to dirty, last 4th of july I saw a few mayflies downtown by the bank parking lot. The only thing to worry about out of that river is to much mercury in the fish. I know lots of people that eat the fish from there and are fine. Unless you have some type of symptoms of some type of poisining then I wouldnt worry about it. As a simple test go in a room with no windows and a book. Shut off the lights, If you can read the book go see teh doctor if not then your fine.

Doski, i'm talking about below the dam, not above it. And i was just joking about glowing. I know a lot of people that eat fish from the wall. The crappies in the lake are fine. I'm cooking some for dinner today. I'll post a picture later.
