Spinning gear advice.

Hey all. New guy here. I live in Pittsburgh, pretty much a stone's throw from the Mon River. have very little experience fishing, but I've picked up a few ideas here and there. I'd appreciate it if some of you more experienced folks could tell me if I'm headed in the right direction with my thinking in terms of gear.

I'm looking at a St. Croix Avid X 6'6" MF and a Daiwa Procyon 2500 reel. I'll be bank fishing mostly, and I use a wheelchair. 6'6" seems about the right length for portability for me since I don't drive. To my thinking, what I'm looking for is a jack of all trades, master of none type of set up. I have no idea what species are in the river by me, so I'm thinking to get various sizes of soft plastics and small crankbaits to cover a range of situations and species. My budget doesn't allow for more than one rod and reel at the moment, but I'll probably get more as I get further stuck in.

Thanks in advance,

FishinWheeler

Holy crip, it's a crapple!

I'm a big St. Croix fan.  I feel that a 6'6" medium will be a good all around rod for you.  It's light enough to throw some smaller baits yet has enough power if you end up in a fight with a flathead!

First let me say its awesome that you still get out and fish even though your in a wheelchair, thats pretty dam cool if you ask me, and as far as gear goes the rod you are talkin about sounds about right, i know there is a buch of different species in the mon, just about everything you can think of including catfish, bass, drum, muskie, not sure if there is pike but thats just a few species that i know of..i dont really fish the 3 rivers but i have in the past and you never know what the hell your gonna pull outta of em

I use a St. Croix Mojo Bass  6'8"  Medium power, extra fast action. I've got a Shimano Sedona 2500 on it with 30lb Power Pro braid and an 8lb fluorocarbon leader. The thing casts a mile, even with a weightless 5" Senko on it.

I mostly fish the Allegheny and Mon from the banks, and have landed many species with this combo this year. If you decide to go this route, you would save well over $100

If you are on a budget you can get two Ugly Stick elites and two mid range spinners for the same price as the one and you really won't notice the difference.  If you are set on spending $100 for your reel get a Penn Battle 2 instead of that Diawa.  Better reel all around and you can get parts for them easily (like extra spools).
