fish USA.com

I tie my sucker spawn in 1 size (14); my glo bug in a size 12 and scrambled eggs in one size also. Fish USA sells them each in a variety of sizes - does this mean that I should also tie and carry multiple sizes of these flies?

you can tie glo bug only so big - wjy tie it on so many size hooks

Yes you should, smaller sizes(16,18) work best in clear water conditions.

You interested in fishing with me and Drake tomorrow?
We are still planning on heading up too Big Fishing Creek

On the subject of small egg patterns, I tie suckerspawn down to #20.  However, I pretty much use the 18's and 20's exclusively for trout.  Steelhead I usually stick with 12-16's although if its tough sometimes 18's help to take a few fish.

how do you make a glo bug smaller? I use three pieces of glo bug yarn tied to a hook and trimmed. what are you doing to make a smaller fly - less matterial?

    PGH Kid,

For sucker spawns, stick with 3 sizes. #8 for off color/high water, #12 for perfect conditions, and #16 for clear water.

Glo bugs in #12 and #16 are all you need.

Keep both patterns sparce and translucent. THAT is the key. I suggest glo bug yarn instead of angora for the sucker spawn. I've used both, and found that the glo bug yarn outproduces so much more because you can keep it more translucent. If you think you have the right amount, take more out.

Here is a video I did awhile back for glo bugs. I was using McFly Foam, and alot of it, to show how easy they are to tie.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSJsmjFfO_8

McFly Foam is what you want for TINY glo bugs, but anything bigger than an #18 should be using glo bug yarn.

Colors should be Apricot Supreme, Golden Nugget, Peachy King (pink), Cream Delight, and Blue thrown in for good measure. Cerise and Chartreuse are ok choices for "green" water. But by far, the best colors are Apricot Supreme and Cream Delight.

Steelhead are simple creatures, don't overcomplicate things.

I'm not saying that the way you guys tie glo bugs is wrong but it could use some improvement. Sparse flies take more fish. Same with scrambled egg, you should tie them with a very sparse peice of yarn. I'll try to put a tutorial. My camera isnt that great so no promises.

I'm very familiar with the terms "RUN AND GUN" and "FISH ON!"

I've had fish take a size 6 glo bug. Tied them for practice.

I used to do glo bugs like that but not anymore. I take the yarn, split in 4, then tie in like shown. Except i dont pass behind. Pull it to the back but not tight and trim at the bend, looks square till it hits water then look out. You most definately DO need glo bugs down to 20, ive seen it on more then one occasion.

I would think that the smaller glo bug changed your presentation enough to make a difference. I carried #18-#22 glo bugs in my glo bug box for years and never once had to touch them.

However, your #20 may be my #16.

This is true, your size of your yarn may be bigger, your 16 hook may be my 20 hook... lots of variables. 20's are rare but I do use them.
