fabric and craft stores

Does anyone find a better deal by going to these types of stores rather than buyiong all materials at the local fly shop.

If so, what tyoes of material would you buy at these stores?

CRAFTS STORES R GREAT FOR FINDING THINGS THAT R DIFFERENT FROM THE LOCAL FISHING STORE, U USED TO GO TO THOSE CRAFTS STORE TO FIND THINGS THAT PEOPLE WOULD IMAGINE TO USE ON A FLY, BUT THAT WAS WHEN I FIRST STARTED TYING, OVER THE YEARS I LEARNED TO SPEND MY MONEY IN THE LOCAL FLYSHOPS IF NOT AND EVERYONE WENT TO CRAFT STORES R FLYSHOPS WOULD NOT BEABLE TO STAY OPEN. BUT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH CRAFT STORES, I JUST DONT DO TO MANY PATTERNS ANYMORE,

I buy most of my yarn at Walmart.  Good selection and once you buy a roll, you literally have it forever.  I have a small bag of yarn and when I need a certain kind I strip about four or five yards around a card, put the card in with my tying stuff and put the big ball of yarn back into my yarn bag.  I tied my sucker spawn with cotton yarn this year and they worked just fine.  They had this yarn that was three colors, yellow, white and green.  Some of the spawn I tied went from yellow to white or green to yellow and looked just great.  Worked good too, I must have lost about 4 dozen of those to the tribs this past fall.

yarn yes, even for making stoneflies and some bulky nymph bodies. found rabbit fur and grouse feathers at craft stores also. i don't like the stiffness of krystal flash so i use blending filement. don't think all the beads work they sell though, a lot won't go around the bend of the hook. some do, but most don't. i don't think a fly shop will go under because i buy a $2.00 item at a craft store when at their shop they sell it for $5.00 or more. it's usually not their fault anyhow. i support the shop in buying my rods, hackle and hooks their. ~dt

The only thing I buy is embroidery floss for making woven Polish nymphs and some woven bodied stone flies.  Those Polish Nymphs slammed some steelhead for me this past fall.

I've found some of the best quality Peacock swords and eyed tails in crafts stores and they were much cheaper than the local fly shop.
There's quite a few things to be found rummaging through the fabric shops, especially when it comes to steelhead flies.

jeeze, how could i have forgot about peacock herl? you guys want to try something new for sucker spawn. buy Needle Loft craft yarn. make sure you get 100% nylon. it's kinda shiny.unravel the yarn & it makes great sucker spawn and when wet actually gets translucent like an egg. ~dt

Just got back from Michaels, a craft store in Monroeville. I was able to purchase enough beads to last a life time. They are having a clearance sale on beads so I was able to pick up some thing like 1,000 bead packs for $1.50. Wire for tying weighted nymphs was almost given away.

Thank you all for the advice.
