Kooser Lake

We made our yearly trip up to-day,got some Trout, but not what we expected. The mossy weeds were pretty bad & the wind was ever-changing,made for tough jigging. I don't know why the DNR doesn't knock some of them down. Being such a small lake  it shouldn't cost that much. I agree that you do need some weeds, but when you look out & see about 1 doz. wooden bobbers stuck in the weeds, prob. with dead fish on them combined with the limited access of the lake I think that something should be done. The lake area was very clean & the rest room was clean & they did a good job on the grass cutting, but there is no swimming allowed again this year. There were very few guys out. The Trout that we got were all average sized at best. I watched 3 Trout cruising very close to shore picking off small Tadpoles.  sam

sam - I think kooser lake is in trouble - silting in and overgrowth of algae and weeds.  I assist in the stockings there almost every year and if the buckets are put in by the beach then the trout become essentially inaccessible due to algae and weeds.  many of us carry buckets more towards the dam where the water is deeper and less weeds/algae - but for how much longer?

remember, trout are stocked by the PFBC and the lake/state park is managed by the DCNR - they have different objectives and different budgets - I would bet that the DCNR dredging budget is near zero and they may look upon dredging as interfering with the natural progression of things.  same with pumphouse lake in laurel hill state park - it's almost gone now with silt.

That confuses me. You're implying that trout can't/won't swim from where their bucket was dumped? I've only fished they're a few times, but isn't the beach only like 150yd from the dam?

the upper half of the lake (the beach is at the very furthest point from the dam) is choked with alge and weeds.  and this is regrettably where the stocking truck goes and also where there's usually a lot of fishermen set up.  one has to carry buckets a good bit to get to where the weeds are fewer.
