Good spots in Westmoreland county

Hey guys first post here. I recently moved from Greensburg to the Irwin area. I had very good luck at the delayed harvest in Ligonier lately. I understand that it is one of the 8 selected streams that got heavily stocked. This was my go to spot until I moved. I can hit it occasionally but if I'm looking to fish before work, it's just too far out of the way now.

I've tried to research the forums for my area and everything seems to be almost a decade old. I had a few in the Yough thanks to recent stockings but what are the best spots in this area for trout or smallmouth? West Newton, Sutersville, Hutchinson and Lowber are all 15-20 minutes from me so I have access to the Yough and Sewickley creek I'd appreciate some help on where to head with my fly rod. Thank you!

Isn't Irwin a suburb of Greensburg?

West Newton, Sutersville and all Yough spots are good larger water locations for small mouth, and trout if you fish the club stocked areas.  That said, they stock in the spring, and the rains really change the water levels of the Yough quickly.  If you are close, not a bad thing as you can monitor the water and go during the peak windows.  It takes longer to recover from high water than smaller water, and can be affected from rains further away and the ACE releasing water at the lake.  Best bet is to do some exploring and once you find a decent location, start supporting that area's stocking club.  I doubt anyone is going to post their honey hole on this site, but some have given pretty good info on here in the past.

If you're in Irwin, and looking to swing flies in moving water for trout and smallmouth, you've already named all the places closest to you.  If you lived in Greensburg, I assume you're aware of most of what's in the central and eastern part of the county.

I grew up in Irwin and lived there till '97.  You've got some North Huntingdon Twp parks nearby if you want some nearby fishing in small lakes.  Indian Lake gets trout.  Has some bass, gills and carp too from what I understand.  Oak Hollow Park was a decent place to scratch an itch for cookie cutter largemouth back in the day.  Brush Creek in Shafton used to have some decent sucker fishing that might be fun on the fly.  Penn Township Municipal Park in Harrison City has a small lake, that I've heard was expanded a few years back, but haven't been there in several years.

I forgot all about Brush creek. I'm aware of the distance from Irwin to Greensburg and a 25 minute drive turning into a 45 minute drive to Ligonier may not seem like a big deal, it doesn't bode well with trying to squeeze fishing in my morning schedule before my shift starting in the afternoon. I simply don't have the time for an almost hour trip one way during the week. It's nothing more than an occasional weekend spot now. I'm almost at the top of the hill on 30 so I'm pretty much in North Huntingdon and Ligonier just isn't as close as it seems. It's not far but it's certainly not a 'suburb' of Greensburg.

I appreciate the info though. The Yough is big and I just didn't know what sections or towns may or may not be better than others. I've never fished any moving water more than 15-20 feet wide so maybe the Yough just seems intimidating to me.

I wasn't trying to get info on people's holes lol I just wanted to narrow my search a bit. With the goofy weather and different people stocking different places I didn't know if one part of the Yough or Sewickley were better than others. I'm happy to explore the waters around me but there's a fine line between exploring water and me being a newer angler in an unfamiliar area finding his way. 90% of my fishing before this year was done in Jefferson county. Thank you guys for the input, though!

That's my old neighborhood - Hunters Woods Lane.  I don't get down that way often anymore, but the drive from Irwin to Greensburg seems to take longer than ever, so I get what yer saying about the drive east.

I didn't fish the Yough much when I lived there, and never for the trout that the clubs stock.  But we'd catch all different species of fish around Coulter and Rillton when I was in high school. But that was 25 years ago, so not sure what it's like now.  Hopefully someone can give you some more info about the trout fishing out that way.

Yeah you were close for sure. I'm right BT the Italian miners society and Hahntown VFW. Coulter and Rillton, huh? Maybe I'll poke around this weekend and look around. Too cold for me to fish this weekend lol trout is what I have the most luck with but I'll catch anything my 5wt rod can handle! I love a good fight, which is why I'm looking for smallmouth too. Thanks!

Edit: what runs through Rillton anyway? Little Sewickley?

I meant the Yough near Rillton.  It's been so long, I don't remember exactly where we fished there, but I think it was off of Turner Valley Road.  We used good old nightcrawlers and caught smallmouth, carp, suckers, cats and the occasional mud puppy.

I don't remember much about Little Sewickley, only went there a few times when I was very young.

Not sure how good it is but the state stocks Long Run which is right along Lincoln Way and 48 in White Oak.
