favorite crappie lures/bait
Was wondering what everybody's favorite crappie lures/ bait are? With the ice season looking like it's coming to an end soon the open water will be here before we know it and i cant wait to do some pre spawn crappie fishing.

Water temperatures below, 64 degrees F. 1/32 to 1/16 oz. jig and tube bodies of various colors sometime presented one to two feet under a bobber but, mostly allowed to free fall in shallow to 8 ft of water over any form of structure. Water temperatures above 64 degrees F. same, as above except, deeper water over structure such as brush piles. Even if the sonar shows no fishy pictures, the area is worth a try. FYI. I am not one of the 10% of the anglers that catch ninety percent of the fish but, I do have fun! Good luck.

^^^ Like he said, But sometimes I go way smaller sz. on the jigs & deeper with the float. The 1" Power bait minnow packs are nice to carry in a pocket & the flash ov a Road Runner can be the ticket. Change colors 'till u find out which is workin' that day. Minnies r fav. live bait for most. Sometimes after Ice out if they ain't hittin' try 1/2 a minnie & might limit out. I fish mostly in the dark for 'em "not paranoid"  but purdy much the same other than have to wiggle a little more at night. I only use one rod and keep it in hand, when reelin' in with a float wiggle/twitch/stop for 8 sec. or so & do that all the way to the boat or shore that way u find the fish eaiser, sometimes they r right under your feet or boat. GL&TC crappy

The ice out period is the only time I'll go to a minnow and gold hook under a sliding bobber, all season. This allows me to search and destroy. I do most of my earliest ice out fishing from shore and this allows me a lot of diversity.

Yea i figured fatheads/minnows would do the trick, wanna try some of the crappie crank baits that have come out recently, figure ice out is the best time cuz they will be super aggressivr

The jig or plain minnie is your best bet right after ice-out. The water is still cold so a slow/wiggle/twitch or just let the minnie swim will work better for yea that early in the season.

Size 1/32 silver jighead, white marabou. Cut a piece that extends about 2 inches past the hook bend, tie the 'bou at end of hook shaft and wrap the 'bou up to end of hook shank next to head. Go back down to original tie and dub on some white Ice Dub. Wrap up to head, tie off, cement. It takes me about 2-3 minutes to make one...so most could likely do it in 1-1.5. Fish under float swimming and/or popping.

Here's what you do. Spend a few $100 buying every cool jig, lure, etc that everyone says works for them. Then take a small fathead minnow, a #2 or #4 trokar octopus hook and either a bobber or a small split shot and catch fish. There is almost no situation you'll find yourself in where an artificial will outfish a live minnow. Sure, not having to get a new minnow during a hot bite is nice, and yes, there are cases where it is probably easier to get a jig presented than a minnow. But that doesn't matter. Minnows win.
Now if you want white bass, BTDT has a secret jig... :D

Thank goodness I had those jigs as I understood you were bringing the minnows ......... to share??? Good time buddy, (watchin you fish with a wet foot) better days A-COMIN.

Im a junkie when it comes to buying fishing tackle especially lures and soft plastics, doesnt matter if its for panfish,bass,trout whatever. But more times than not i find myself coming back to the live bait,particularly minnows/chubs. They just flat out catch fish, but there has bin times that a certain lure or plastic will out fish a live minnow so i guess it pays to have both

That's just my stripes. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I like to buy it and I'd like to use it, but minnows are better. BTDT - we had plenty. But I wasn't going to bait your hook, so...

While I will not deny that fatheads and the like produce many fish, I have had many days where myself fishing plastics has out fished my friends fishing bait right beside me. Nothing real fancy. Small tube jigs at ice out, curly tails when the water warms later in the spring. I find that color is the biggest factor most days. Used to fish fatheads exclusively, but I wade alot right at ice out, and got tired of my hand going numb from dunking it in the Minnie bucket non stop. Still get the numb hand fishing the plastics, but now it's just from taking fish off the hook :)

1in gulp alive minnow on a trout magnet jig head and 2in powerbait ribbontail grub (fire tiger) on 1/16oz head are my go to's
