PGC PROPOSAL DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

OTHER MODIFICATIONS EXPLAINED
Regarding the black bear seasons to be held in the 2016-17 license year, the only change proposed – the addition of a four-day extended season in WMU 1B – was given preliminary approval by the board.
If given final approval, this season would run concurrent Wednesday through Saturday of the first week of firearms deer season in WMU 1B (Nov. 30-Dec.3). This season was recommended to prevent further expansion of bears into the western portion of WMU 1B, where the potential for bear-human conflicts is high.
The board also proposed eliminating the extended season for black bears in WMU 3A. An extended bear season overlapping with part of the firearms deer season has been held in WMU 3A previously, and a proposal to continue the extended season initially was included on the meeting agenda. However, commissioners removed the proposal in preliminarily adopting the full slate of seasons and bag limits.
They said the primary reason for removal was concern over the loss of firearms deer-hunting pressure in neighboring WMU 2F due to deer hunters opting to hunt instead in WMU 3A because of the additional bear-hunting opportunity.

I have 2 complaints about this:
1.  I'll admit right here and now this first one is pure selfishness.  I hunt 1B exclusively.   1B sells out fast, if not first, then usually second.  Tags are gone before the non-residents can even apply.  Now we're going to have an influx of more hunters that are applying because this overlap is not just buck and bear, but the 1st Saturday of doe as well, 3 overlapping seasons.  I'm going to be ****ed if I don't get a doe tag because of this.  Told you I was being selfish.  They want the bear population in 1B reduced, bring the season in earlier.  You can't tell me this isn't about selling more bear tags.  Typically non-bear hunters will now jump on a bear tag "just in case".  The PGC is looking a few years ahead when the price of an individual tag is going to be what, doubled or tripled?
2.  Read the last sentence of the PGC proposal again.  If they're concerned about this happening with these 2 WMUs (2F and 3A), how is simply moving the same program to a different WMU going to result in a different outcome?  The reasons for having extended seasons in 1B and 3A may differ, but why would the unintended consequences be different?

PGC has been ******* around with deer regs since the Gary Alt catastrophe.  ****'s gotta stop!

Pike I wouldn't say you are the one being selfish, it's actually the PGC being greedy.   When I read "This season was recommended to prevent further expansion of bears into the western portion of WMU 1B, where the potential for bear-human conflicts is high."  I thought bend-over WMU 1B and..... assume the position.

It is what it is. Can any one think of a upside to this? I sure can.

    Some one sounds bitter.

I personally like the idea. I try to shot my buck in archery, been successful at doing that in recent years. With doe coming in the second week of the season gives me an opportunity to hunt some the first week should I tag my buck in archery. I personally do not bear hunt the regular season so you could say I don't bear hunt. But I will buy a bear tag if this happens. I have seen only one bear while deer hunting so it's odds are not in my favor but the memories if my dad or myself get a shot at one would be awesome.

To address tunas "love" the PGC not sure I would go that far but I can say with out state agencies there would be almost zero big game left to hunt. I laugh when I read "no hunters hunting" when the GC adjusts seasons to help raise hunters in the woods people cry "hunters going to shoot all deer" GC trying to get more money "greedy" would it be better if it were free? For the people who think the GC is out to screw the hunter will always gravitate to the side that paints a dark picture. Like I said it is what it is.

Also sorry Tuna if your herd is poor condition. Where I am at its very healthy I learned not to take my experiences and think they are the same for another hunter. No amount of anyone's stories of yesteryear will make me think hunting was better back then. Because I know I am hunting the healthiest deer herd in the last 100 years of pa history in my area. Noticed I said healthier, not number of deer.

So the upside of the excitement, opportunity at hunting something new that I would not do other wise , and memories with family and friends while hunting. Yes I think there is an upside.

BTW if it doesn't happen I will not shed a single tear, if it passes I will excited at the opportunity.

I agree pretty much with what you're saying but if the GC wants more bear out of 1B then tag on the extra days in front of the regular bear season.  Sure seems to me like they want to sell more bear tags and they will with more deer hunters like you and I purchasing one "just in case".

anzomick,my deer herd is no poorer than the over all state. I can kill two bucks every year in Pa. and Ohio. Healthier, I'm not sure, less deer definitely.  Times change, years ago not many trophy hunters, you just shot a legal buck, like I said before I hunted 4 states regularly, with no AR. Many deer where taken that no one would shoot today. But it was sure fun to see 100 plus deer a day. Today I hunt the best bucks available which may or may not be something you'd shoot. In Ohio I got a 12pts that scored 133 7/8 in Pa. I shot a average 8pt.  Some of my better bucks 's came before the AR and the HR. I'm not living in the past because I still have no problem taking mature deer. PCG needs do do better deer management and worry less about MONEY. They made a pile with their gas deals on Game lands. They still kill to many doe. I'm I favor of a two day doe season. Either two days following buck gun or the two Saturday's. Why do think they are letting non resident apply early for doe tags, because 26.70 looks better than 6.70.

Awesome, we differ in someways but agree in others. Your opinions seem justified from your experiences. I still do not understand why you answered pikes question that was directed to me. What result were you looking to get out of that?

Big Tuna, where are non-residents allowed to apply for doe tags early?  They usually go in 2 weeks after the residents.

Now I'm liking this even less.  Not a big conspiracy theorist (just a little one), and piling all of these applications on the court house employees almost at the same time leaves little room for error in making sure all residents get a tag before NRs.

Here's the deal chances are a lot of resident will not get a doe tag this year or at least not 2. Not that big a deal to me because I 've slowed down on doe hunting. One doe every other year is enough for me, I've killed
way to many. With that said my son and I buy 6 doe tags more or less so (we save the doe) I'm believe will killed 9 doe in the last 8 years between the two of us. That's 9 deer out of 48 tags. We certainly could have filled more or all but we don't like are current deer herd so every little bit may help. Just say PGC sell 20,000 non resident tags and takes them out of the residents hands that 20,000x 26.70= 534,000 compare to 20,000 x6.70=134,000 so who is our great PGC for,not us. It's all about the Benjamin's

I fished with my neighbor today.  He's good friends with a warden and this guy told him flat out this whole bear thing is to increase revenue.  It started in 3A, then stopped this year.  Now moving it to 1B.  Is this something they're just going to keep rotating around the state?

If  they can create revenue they'll do it. Look for more stupid things, just a matter of time, pheasant stamp? Possible? License will increase in all forms not just general license. Doe tags ,archery, flintlock, trapping.  Do to the poor way they managed the deer herd, they are losing thousands of hunters,so the few left must pay. Where's Alt when you need him.lol

5-year Proposal for Resident License Increase
Below is a breakdown of the proposal to increase resident licenses along with projected sales. An Ultimate Outdoorsmen discounted license, which would offer privileges combining the resident adult, bear, archery, muzzleloader, furtaker, migratory game bird and special wild turkey licenses is also proposed.

I also heard they want to do away with all Junior licenses and tags.  They'd keep the seasons in place for the junior hunters but their licenses/tags would cost the same as an adult.

Pike, I see there is an actual reduction in the price for the antlerless, both resident and non-resident, anything on that?

I don't know BeenThere, am I not reading the charts correctly?  It looks to me like at the end of the 5 year period, resident anterless will be $15 more than what we're paying now and $75 more for a non-resident tag.
