ramcat run
Anyone fish the "trophy trout waters" ramcat to ohiopyle? Is it accessible by foot or do you need a drift boat

Accessible by foot. Tough wading, steep banks, plenty of drops from 12" to 10' deep in one step. Be careful.

I access it by raft, heh heh. Ohiopyle side of the river, there is a bike trail, easy walking & you can drop down to the river in most spots. If snowy/icy, take extra care.

That area is loaded with browns and bows some wild most stocked. Be careful that water is very swift. I personally would not fish it alone

Alright, I appreciate the heads up. I will spend some serious time scouting it first then from the bike trail.. but as of now come summer I'm more scared of the snakes ive been hearing about then I am the the river lol I have a lot of wading experience in all types of water and rivers are to be respected and I have spent a lot of time swimming and horseplaying in the yough to know it definitely needs to be taken seriously. I just need some new home water to get acquainted too because laurel hill and loyalhanna aren't much challenge anymore

Yea, there's more than a few of them. One guide I know won't let clients out of the boat unless in an open area. This guy was about 8-10 feet off the bike trail. 4 to 4 1/2 feet long & thick as my wrist.

My Taurus Judge with 410 shells usually solves my snake issues. It's all self defense. Copperheads are the worst. Much more aggressive than rattle snakes.

Just curious. I have a public defender myself, is that legal? I even like snakes and can't really see a situation where I would shoot before walking away. But i understand an aggressive, poisonous, wild animal can be a threat to me and my family. before I discharge my handgun in a public place, I'd like to know if it's OK.

I have found copperheads in my yard but have never had the need to destory it. I have caught and relocated them to protect my family and pets. Have gone out of my. way to show my kids the snakes and explained the danger and told them to stay away. I'm neither a snake lover or hater but do believe they serve a purpose.

I don't see that working very well.l would suggest snake proof boots, I never heard any in a wader boot but they do make snake proof chaps and leggings to wear over your waders till you enter the water. Remember a snake can only strike so high off the ground. Most bites accure because aren't paying attention to where they're stepping or reaching.Like most animals if they hear you coming they'll do what ever it takes to escape, its the ones you surprise that are the real threat.

Never fish the Yough (anywhere) below Ramcat without a wading staff. If you want a challenge, you'll get more than you asked for. Be careful, the Yough is not to be taken lightly.

Totally agree. The Yough has been trying to kill me since 1981. Came real close a few times. The current can change quickly by the amount of water the Corps decides to let out of the lake. Rocks are slippery and the powerful current can pin you down to the bottom. I like to fish the river in shorts and sneakers, never waders. Sometimes I'll wear ice fishing spikes over my sneakers and I wear a floatation fishing vest. If the water is too cold, I stay on shore. Water is warmest in September. Never the same river from trip to trip. Still, I fish it more than any other water. Great trout and small mouth fishery, even managed a few nice walleye over the years. You can fish the section from Confluence (Ramcat just down river) to Ohiopyle on foot or bike from the bike trail side. In the summer and early fall you can raft or canoe. Be prepared to beach your craft or you'll pass spots holding fish without getting a cast. The section from Connellsville to West Newton is a lot tamer but still dangerous. Too many commercial canoe liveries make fishing weekends unbearable. Great small mouth fishing and lot's of stocked trout. Saw many snakes over the years but they never bothered me. I know guys that are so freaked out by them that they won't fish the Yough. Can't say I ever heard of a fisherman getting bit? The Yough is a beautiful but dangerous river. Kind of like dating a super model who's also a ninja.

Here's a fun little quote from Dwight Landis' book "Trout Streams of Pennsylvania". " The wading in the Lehigh Gorge is among the most difficult I've encountered in Pennsylvania. Only the Youghiogheny River presents more brutal wading conditions. During low water periods, the wading is not quite so tough." Keep an eye on the USGS gages. You'll learn what level your comfortable with. I generally won't bother fishing if the Ramcat gage is above 2.6 feet. Also, don't trust the gage readings until after 6 PM Friday evenings during the commercial rafting season. The Army Corp of Engineers generally bump up the flow for the rafts on weekends.

Thanks for the quote. After several readings I'm thinking that Mr. Landis is referring to the Lehigh Gorge when he says, "During low water periods, the wading is not quite so tough"?
