Stickleback Cinema
For those that don't know sticklebacks are a small fish (minnow) that live in our waters. Per the kyck-a (for the soccer dads out there), PFbC chart, they are endangered species. Not so endangered, that I find one in my minnow bucket after buying bait every 3-4 times. They are really cool looking fish, with spike type dorsal fins. The reason I posted, last weekend, I took the kids out and bought 4 doz minnows, but got about 2 hours of fishing in. Figured it was Fall bite, so I'd keep them for next trip. My set up is Rubbermaid 18 gallons bin, with aerator and filter, which usually does pretty well. Meanwhile kids are asking to put a minnow or two in a cup as s pet... So, as the softy dad, I bought a fish bowl for them. Knowing fish a little, I made sure it was a mini tank (aerator & filter), fish safe liquid, ect. A few days in, minnows were dropping like flies, and their mini tank had ridiculously skinny minnows. I notice the dead ones have some sort of fungal infection, so tosed some fungus tabs in, and all good. Head out for Saturday fishing trip (4 doz. down to 2 doz.), I notice a fish with a pointy nose. Thinking it was a shiner, I'd take a look. It's a stickleback. Figure, toss it into the tank. Look again, another stickleback. Toss him in. Now have two flatheads and 2 sticklebacks in 1.5 gallons. As I'm messing around, one of the flatheads decides there are too many fish, and dive bombs out of tank. Fine by me, he makes his way into minnow bucket. Now, 2 s-backs and 1 fathead. Sticklebacks make very good small tank creatures, and imagine bad bait. They aren't nearly as spastic as fattys. They use their pectoral fins mostly, until eating, they kind of play dead, then attack like crazy, Fatheads are probably not the best small tank fish, they are high energy very sporadic movers, and can see why fish love to eat them. Sticklebacks seem to mostly move with their pectoral fins, like a lot of good tank fish. I guess check your buckets. If brown, change your undies. I know some of you doods need a reminder (never trust a fart)... If stickleback, toss in a tank. Fun to watch, and doubt very good bait. Maybe it is a PFBC move to help us reintroduce them by getting them into bait supplies? If so, maybe let them go where you are fishing,

Censored because of the fake I-D-s idiots who were somehow getting around the spam filter protection I think... Happened on the NY Board also, I tried the word kiddo and it was allowed though.

BTW... enjoyed the read, pretty neat to hear the comparison on the minnows, I think I just thought of all minnows behaving about the same, just differing in sizes. I will look closer at the next batch of minnows.

Pork did you type that in on a phone keyboard? Because you are typically a solid poster but that thing is a mess. :) I thought the same thing... I was like "why can't he say KAYAK" but that didn't make much sense. Guess you need to say chidrens! As for sticklebacks, did you know there are two kinds (something about the number of spines they have) and that when they breed they make a nest out of bubbles? Pretty cool. In my experience they are complete jerks to other fish AND each other... I've had them kill other minnows in a 30G aquarium even when they had plenty of room. They are very easy to keep and will eat flake food/fish food readily. I'd say your ratio is about right, or maybe a bit low. In the summer it seems like we get them a bit more often with our minnows. Having tried them enough times for bait as a youngster I'd agree that they are terrible bait. Don't waste your time, huck them overboard. They are native to our lakes and streams anyway so no harm no foul. If you get shiners at Erie you get some cool not_shiners. Last trip we got 2 or 3 tiny perch and a couple white bass. Tried to raise the baby perch but my resident black bullhead (3" long) ate them. :( They are perfect miniatures.

It was on my iPad after watching my DVRed Stillers game, so had a few beers in me too... Sounds like you got a nice setup. I may have to break down and buy a real tank. I'd love to put some small native fish in it. They are pretty cool to watch.

Those sticklebacks will kill every minnow in your bucket. Find any dead minnows with their bellies eaten?

I have two in a small aquarium with a fat head. The fat head seems to be the one in control??? The one stickleback just kind of lays around, then darts if he sees me come by to feed. The other is a complete fish flake hog. The fat head gets his share of flakes, and has his section of the tank that he chases them off if too close. I'm guessing if I don't keep up on the feeding that fat head is in trouble...

Cool read. Just a few quick things though: 1) the sticklebacks you have if you're in southwestern pa are most likely Brook sticklebacks which are only a candidate species, as opposed to threespines which are the endangered ones. 2) Be very cautious in keeping such delicate fish in an uncycled tank, if the ammonia or nitrites build up too high (which they tend to do in such small tanks) the fish will most likely die from ammonia burn or blood poisoning. And 3) If you have two of them keep an eye out for spawning behavior, sticklebacks get very territorial when spawning and often times the male will kill the female after spawning if they do not have enough space. Sorry for such a long rant, although being that I'm a fish-keeping obsessed guy who has 14 large tanks full of local species, I just to make sure that people know what they're getting in to when they keep fish, much more involved and scientific than cats and dogs haha.

No, I buy most of 'em, but if I ever have enough money someday I'd like to take half of the basement in my future house and custom build and plumb myself a multi-thousand gallon chilled Erie tank with at least Lake Trout and Burbot in it (and lake sturgeon, if they ever rebound enough to get taken off the endangered list) and possibly some Steelies, Browns, etc, but I'd have to decide whether I wanted to do all native species or just bad-a** Salmonids thatre in erie, I could go either way as of now. plus a few big stream tanks too with brookies, suckers, and darters. But that's just me fantasizing that I'll make enough money as a fisheries biologist to have all of those nice things :). For now like I said I have 14 tanks but probably in the next two weeks I'm downsizing to 5 so I don't have as much work (eats up several hours daily), although the new five will be bigger than the ones I have now and more complex systems so it'll probably wind up being just as much work haha.

Some people fear height, water, even clowns and, some some people fear invasive exotic (nonnative) species seriously threatening the integrity of PA. rivers, lakes and, forest. I've seen, over the years, how my little piece of Penn's Woods has changed from the results of a invasive species. No offense intended; I'm just me being me, and dealing with my phobia. On another note, regarding your aquarium project, perhaps you could get some ideas from Wayde King and Brett Raymer of ATM at  www.acrylicaquariums.com/

I'm not a fan of invasive species either, that's why I love fly fishing up along the PA/NY border, all wild Brookie streams miles from the nearest dirt road. That and lake trout fishing are my favorite types of fishing in PA. Honestly, if be happy if the PFBC stopped stocking steelhead and browns and tried to reestablish the brook trout population that once thrived in the streams of Erie. But since the Steelies and Browns are here, I might as well fish for them since they fight well.

Glad you took no offense, I've been known to make my feelings known towards the the PFBC and PGC biologist with regard to their "projects". Personally I'd be happy if both agencies knocked off trying to fool mother nature; especially the trout and deer programs and, just get back to enforcement. Good luck with your project PS. And leave the dam weeds alone!!!!!

Well, I'm not quite a biologist yet, that's just what I'm studying to be. Whether I can find a job or not is another story, though. I feel the same way, personally I think that they should stock less trout and just reduce the creel limit so they last longer in the creeks (and maybe even a no harvest season on some of the purely stockie streams) so that they can spend more money on habitat restoration projects and even breeding/stocking endangered species such as sturgeon and eastern sand darters. I feel like half of the trout they stock for opening day just get killed that day anyway, so maybe a limit of 3 during regular season and 1 during extended season would make 'em last longer. But maybe that's just how I feel. I'd love it if they stocked brook trout purely to try to get their populations to return, although I understand that many of the urban and suburban streams in SW PA wouldn't be cold or clean enough to support them anymore.

I'm not totally against stocking trout, just stop putting those fish in water where they have absolutely no chance of surviving past a few days. Especially, where other popular species once thrived without the need for a biologist. Then expect people to buy a trout stamp to fish those waters. Just a big scam in my book.

TOOOOOOOOOOOO much effort and money on those lousy trout!!!!! { And Steelhead too!} Stock some fish that are good eating, a lot of people might buy fishing licenses then !!!!!! Hint: Create a good walleye, sauger lake in SW pa. Hint hint, hint, Cross Creek Lake.
You should send the PFBC a letter & give em a piece of your mind!

What we need is a few good musky lakes around Pittsburgh :). They used to stock north park with tiger Muskies and wet socks er I mean walleye (lol) but that was before they drained the lake.

How many more do you want stocked at Cross Creek? Like carp at Linesville? Geez they are there you gotta catch em Nice about sticklebacks pork I first saw em in smelt net catches at Niagara in NY. Neat to hear how they are in aquarium settings ive done many species in a tank never them though cool read

One still kicking. He greets me at the front of the tank, and seems to associate me with food. Cool little creature. The other decided to pin himself behind my filter inlet pipe. Hung on for a day or two, but couldn't overcome the trauma.
