greenlick

I was very surprised to read in the latest PFC biologist report that fishing has been great at Greenlick Dam. I have been fishing there approx. 3 times per week since spring & can honestly say that this year has been the worst fishing & the smallest amount of fishermen that I have seen in the last 10 yrs. I am not saying that if I don't catch them ,then they are not there. What I am saying is that if I don't see or hear of any amount being caught, that does not equal great fishing in my book.   sam

Been bad every time I fished it. Some days from daylight to dark. I don't listen to those reports. I listen to people I know fish there for the facts. I'm hoping to start back there by the end of the week. Don't know anybody that has bragged out that place this year.

Tigercat, I don't usually pay attention to what others say because if it is hot not many will broadcast it. I will if asked specifically & I know that I don't know what everybody does, but I was really surprised that that biologist printed that. A lot of people count on them to at least give good info. All that I can think is that he may have gotten bad info or the wrong lake. Some of the weed beds there didn't come up this year, that is what I think caused the slump because it was decent in the spring before the water got too warm. At least it looks like they got the leak repaired.  sam

Sam, are you referring to last week's regional report that starts with "Fishing is great at Green Lick Dam.  Anglers are reporting success from shore and boat."

If so, although it's fine print, it says at the top of the page:

"Reports compiled by Miranda (Mandy) Smith (mirsmith@pa.gov), Southwest Region Education Specialist, using information provided by Waterways Conservation Officers, Area Fisheries Managers and other PFBC staff."

Should probably also say, "And local bait shops or anglers who tend to stretch the truth a bit sometimes."

P.S. - I've never fished Greenlick and know nothing about it, so not disagreeing with your assessment.  Just wanted to point out those are not biologist reports, and usually second or third hand info.

Yea Sam after May I didn't do much of anything. Small Walleyes and sub par Bass. Marking lots of fish. All deep and all dormant it seems.

It is confusing the way it's presented sandwiched between "Biologist Reports" and "Stream Notes."  I've read a few over the years that make me scratch my head as well.

No weeds in a PA. lake...........  imagine that!

Positive fishing reports given by "regional educational specialist(?)"............   I'm pretty sure we can believe those reports

As for the biologist, the only time I see them on a body of water is (at night) when they are wearing their stupid yellow rubber suits electro-shocking the fish so, they can 'pluck' a scale to have something to look at, under those over priced microscopes we pay for.  Then prepare propaganda  telling us how great the fishing is; of which I would agree if, I could use my welder instead of a fishing pole to catch fish with.

Personally, if I were standing beside a Penn 'State' Fish and Boat Commission biologist knee deep in dead fish, wearing a stupid yellow rubber suit and he/she said something smells..............  I wouldn't believe them!

Don't get me wrong; I have seen these highly educated morons out fishing, they are the anglers standing waist deep (usually fly fishing) in well stocked trout streams/rivers (prior bass and walleye fishery(with easy access)) wearing those stupid yellow suits we probably paid for.

I can't think of a better time fishing then wearing a pair of old sneakers, cut-off blue jeans, a tee shirt with the picture of Uncle Si and, a ball cap that says "I'm a PA Angler" displaying a "SOS" button.  Fishing with a Walmart Shakespeare Combo rod and reel chunking a 1/0 hook baited with a big juicy Walmart Canadian night crawler danging below a 3" pink and yellow bobber!  Standing waist deep in a well stocked trout stream/river (prior bass and walleye fishery(with easy access)) right next to some dude in a yellow rubber suit (we probably paid for) who is flinging fly's.

I guess that could be the reason for the "Trout Stamp";  cheap old pharts like me won't by em thereby, we have no need for a Walmart Shakespeare combo fishing pole and, miss out on a boat load of fun.

Sorry about getting off the subject a bit; I might be suffering from too much exposure of "Bluebird Day" brought on from too many hours of trolling deep diving bottom bouncing lures and never having to remove any weeds (or fish) from my hooks.

Many thanks to Sam for bringing his subject to light.

PS.  The combo reel must be spooled with 22 1/2 pound test yellow fluorescent line and don't forget the #4 chrome plated snap swivels.

And if you read this week's Southwest report you'll know, among other things, that Deer Lakes is "giving up catches of small bluegill" and that the DHALO on Loyalhanna Crick is "still loaded with trophy class trout."

BTDT, come on down if you want in on some of that action!

Thanks for the invitation, greatly appreciated but, I'm doing just fine catching NOTHING on Pymatuning, Wilhelm and, Shenango.

'Penn State' Fish and Boat Commission says the fish are biting everywhere............. all I need, is a stamp to catch em!

Hey if ya promise to keep this under your fishin hat I'll let ya in on a little secret I discovered from reading the threads on the Salmon Boards.

Shh, those boys tie fish eggs/skein in little bags (made from cheese cloth) and catch some mighty big fish from the pictures I seen.

Sooooooo, should I ever wish to fish for trout in my local streams (which is the day there are no other food supplies(doomsday preppers say there will be)) I'm going to make some little bags (made from window screen) and fill them with chicken/rabbit pellets.  The trout will think they are right at home and go into a feeding frenzy......  I'm tellin ya!

    Gotta get, Pymie beckons!

Thanks Sam. My next question was how low was it. Don't think I'll risk my boat then. Maybe if it ever rains again.
